Hi, I recently purchased a 2009 f150 xlt 5.4L 3V. I bought it for a really good price and trusted the seller that it only needed a starter. For $1200 I didn't ask to many questions about it. But now I am regretting it.. I have put the new starter on. Then a new battery. Now i have been trying to figure why it will start momentarily then die. It starts right up till about 900-1200rpm (about 1 second) then dies. Does this every time I try to start it. I have a cheap obd scanner and got codes P0340, P0012, P0022. Camshaft position sensor A circuit bank 1, camshaft position timing over retarted Bank 1.
so I replaced both camshaft position sensors. Didn't fix anything. Then I replaced the fuel pump module on the rear crossmember... No change.
then I tried starting it with starting fluid and it will run as long as I spray starting fluid right in the throttle body. The valve train was making some cringworthy noises also. But since it ran that made me think it was a fuel issue. So I checked the fuel rail while trying to start it and it had excellent fuel pressure. Then my brother came over with a better scan tool and it keeps saying "OBD systems readiness test incomplete" and camshaft position sensor A bank 1.
so that's where I'm at now..
is it a bad PCM/ECU?
bad fuel injectors?
Out of timing?
I could really use any help or advice as I don't have much money to randomly buy parts not knowing if it needs it or not.
thanks in advance I greatly appreciate it!
You probably have a screwed up timing system. Because that pretty much always happens with the 5.4 3v. Lesser possibility could be the VCTs with those codes.
Ok thanks. I was thinking about replacing the VVT solenoids. If I am going to have the valve cover off would it be a good idea to go ahead and redo the timing chain, phasers, rollers, and upgrade to the better high pressure oil pump? I figure if I can keep my costs under 3500 (including the $1200 I used to buy the truck) I would still be ok.

Unless you do the work yourself, I don't think you will keep your cost below $3500 if you are going to include the cost of the truck. The the parts alone (at least before 2020) were around $1200 to $1800. Then if you have someone do it, the labor would be about the same. If you read the thread I linked to above, you will see why the labor is so high.
