Default Grilles

I have a 2013 F150 XLT that is painted Kodiak Brown Metallic and I am wanting to paint the Chrome Surround on the grille.

I like the chrome grille it self but the big square ring around it is a bit to much chrome for me.

Has anyone done this themselves?
If so did you have trouble with the paint chipping and flaking?
And also how did you prep the chrome surface before painting it???

Any help and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Billet Works jr.

You need to sand all of the chrome off.

I plastidipped my outer shell black and glossified it. Left the 6 bars chrome. Looks great. Stands up to the power car wash. Only because you don't have to prep the surface other than cleaning it.

1 can of black and half a can of gloss.

Otherwise like I said sand all of the chrome off and paint it. Some have said that scuffing it to a very dull finish with scoth brite works enough as prep.

Winchested... Can you post a pic? I'm thinking about doing just that on my black XLT and would like to know how close a match the plasti-dip gloss black will be.

How long have you had the surround plasti-dipped? has it stood up to stone chips?

Thanks

Check out my thread. https://www.f150forum.com/f116/how-paint-chrome-203305/

Get the best products you can afford, seriously.

Key products: bulldog adhesion promoter(i use this now, instead of what I used in the original post in the thread), and epoxy primer.

Thanks for all of the replies, I am really looking forward to getting this done.

I will probably try to just sand off all of the chrome and them prep, prime, paint, and clear like yall said to.

Hopefully it matches.

Could touch up spray paint and spray can enamel primer and spray can enamel clear coat be used to do this???

I don't have the equipment to use spray guns and all of that...

You don't need to sand off the chrome for the process I do. I've never done that, and never had a problem. I've painted probably 50-60 chrome pieces for people.

I personally would never use a spray can product on my $30k + truck. But that's me. Lots of people on here do it. As a painter, I can't see doing that if you want it to last or look good after a year or 2. Again that's just me, and my experience, it's your truck, you do what you want.

Except his is an actual ptm surround, and not a chrome one
