Gas octane.
I Live in western Kentucky. Our only choices for gas are 87, 89, and 93. I always use 87 because it the norm here and the cheapest. It seems like everyone only talks about 89 or 93 on this forum. Am I missing something, or doing something wrong by using 87. Is that just the tuneable gas octanes. There is about a .10 cent difference between each grade.
We've got 85 here in CO. I'm running a tank of 87 right now to see if there's a difference. Not much in power but maybe some in fuel economy. We'll see, that's just what the omputer on the dash is showing.
Test a few tank fulls of each to see if it makes a differance for your truck....my 2011 5.0L got better mpg on 93 octane than it did on 87...but my 3.5L ecoboost I don't any differance on 87 or 93 as far as mpg......it feels like it runs alittle better on 93 but no gains in mpg.

Thanks guys. To my understanding the higher levels of octane will burn cleaner or more thoroughly, leaving less build up. I alway ran 93 in my motorcycles, but only because my father had always done it. I never run my tank to empty but if I get close enough I may try 89 or 93 just to see.
Looks like I'm pushing 20 mpg city with my last fill up of high test no ethanol gas on the 3.7L. (4x2 regular cab). I filled up over three weeks ago and still have a quarter tank, so I'm not sure, as I hand calculate. Higher octane definitely made a difference on MPGs. Surprisingly. high test made a distinct improvement over mid-range. I assumed that I would get a small beneficial effect with mid-range and none at all with high test. Jury is still out on non-ethanol vs. ethanol.
With gas as expensive as it is, the extra few cents for high test isn't much of a percentage change. Its conceivable that it pays for itself. Anyway, I am still in break in mode and the truck is new. If it makes a measurable difference, I'll pay for it.
At a bare minimum, there's no way I'm going to revert to my old practice of pulling into some el cheapo no name gas station to save three cents per gallon. Name brand from now on.
