FX4 v XLT
I was looking at a FX4 for a month and working with the dealers on the price. One of them found me a XLT and I wasn't really going to give him the time of day as I had my eye on the FX4. He asked me to just give it a chance and come look at it. I did and it had every option and same motor on it with the acceptation of center shifter and interior as the FX4. So I bout the XLT and saved $3500!
Regarding the 'flow-through console' on FX4:
I know that the FX4 gives you bucket seats and a console with the shifter. However, on the XLT, you can upgrade for $300 to bucket seats with a console (but the shifter remains off the steering wheel).
Although I've only seen the 2011 FX4 / XLT consoles in pictures, the XLT gives you an "empty space" on the floor (where the FX4 shifter goes), so you could make better use of that space on the XLT and add something there for storage or whatever.
I did see in another forum that the 2011 FX4 is going to allow a 4.10 e-locker as an option as of Job #2, so maybe that won't be available on the XLT in 2011 (who knows)...

to me its all just a matter of style. there seems to be no great thing that sets the fx4 apart from the xlt. but this is just my humble thought and thus the reason i got a xlt for like $4k less with all the bells and whistles i wanted and needed.
so lets be honest most people will never use the skid plates, and the flow Thur console looks nice but after time its just a storage place and a junk catch all.

I'm hoping 3.73's will be enough, 4.10's are just another step in the wrong direction from an MPG standpoint.
I have been building new F-150's several times a day and I think Ford has still not finalized the web site. Sometimes I can't change interior color, sometimes I can't select the off-road package, etc.
I like the black interior of the FX-4 but really want a bench seat. I also cant confirm that the XLT comes with Select Shift.

If you get the tow package then you'll also get the SelectShift option. The 2011 order guide states, "Trailer Tow Package now includes SelectShift transmission"
If you build an XLT, you won't see "SelectShift" shown on "Build & Price" at the Ford website, even if you include the tow package. However, the Ford order sheet for my 2011 XLT clearly states "SLCT SHFT TRANS", and I have the tow package.
If you get an FX4, the SelectShift will be on the shift-handle down by the floorboard. On the XLT, the SelectShift will be on the shift-handle by the steering wheel.

I do like the flow through center console...but I also like chrome. seems like most of the other options can be added to the XLT to bring it more in line with the FX4.
I guess in the end I'm going to have to figure out exactly what I want for options and price them both out. I know I want the 3.73's, locker, skidplates, 5.5' bed, Sync and tow package (but not max tow). I also know I dont want the tailgate step or leather seats.
As for adding FX4 stickers to a truck that is not, I see that as a 'ricer' move. I dont really have a problem with someone else doing it, just not something I would do.
