front differential
Taking it out will help, but not necessary in most cases. When I regeared I had the mechanic drill and tap in a drain plug in my front diff. Now I don't have to pull the diff to change the oil. I HIGHLY recommend doing this if you are pulling the diff.
The fluid in the axles are synthetic and never need changing for the life of the truck. The oil might turn dark in color, but it is still good for at least a million miles.

Even atmospheric moisture will start accumulating in the front diff. over time, unless it gets used a lot. Drilling and tapping for a 1/2" pipe plug is easy and a very good idea. Just use moderation when tightening because you CAN split the housing with excess torque. A brass plug with a wrap of teflon tape and one-hand snug is plenty.
