Default Flaky fuel gauge?

Wondering if any of you have fuel gauge issues. I have a 2012 XLT with a 36 gallon tank. Anyway, when I get down to between a quarter and an eighth of a tank, the "miles to empty" bounces all over the place. I start it up and it'll say 85 miles to empty, drive a mile or so, it'll jump up to 120 miles to empty, and then back down. Anyway, not a huge deal, but was just interested to see if this is common. Granted, they're two different animals, but our 2010 Expedition doesn't do this. Thanks in advance!

Do you park on an incline? That will throw it off as the fuel will accumulate in the low point and I guess the gauge expects a level tank. The big 36 gal tank has lots of room for the fuel to hide away from the sensor.

Atroz, thanks for the insight. Yes, I do park on an incline. Not much of one, but an incline nonetheless, when it isn't in the garage. I guess that's the issue. I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks again!

I bet its the incline too... shut off your truck on incline... restart it and note readings... find a level spot and shut truck back off... restart and see if the readings change... it seems the miles till empty is calculated on start up

Keep at least ½ tank of fuel and I bet the issue will be / is resolved. *Tank slooshing of fuel.

Keeping the tank low on fuel ...
  • allows condensation in the tank.
    .
  • doesn't provide cooling to the fuel pump which ...
    .
  • ... causes strain on the fuel pump.
    .
    etc., etc., etc..

I say its normal, mine did the same thing when I ran the tank down to near empty. I usually don't let it go below 1/2 so it doesn't bother me.

i also have a 2012 xlt with the 36 gallon tank and mine does this same thing... its rather annoying and has left me stranded. i went to ford about it and it wasnt throwing any codes so there wasnt a problem in their eyes (im sure you know how that goes) anyways i just eliminated the problem by never letting it get under half a tank.
