Fabtech or Zone ?
2014 FX4 Supercrew 4x4
So I'm undecided, I want to go with either a Basic Fabtech 6" suspension lift or a Basic Zone 6" suspension lift.
Does it really matter which? Is it just personal preference? Or are there specific differences between the two?

Nearly all basic lifts are the same. Crossmembers, shocks, blocks and small bolt on accessories.
Whichever is lighter on your wallet.
Higher grade kits are those that come with coilover replacements and cost 3x as much.

look at the difference between the installs... both are 95% identical, but fabtech has you cut a pretty substantial mount off the front diff and replace it with a bolt on bracket that bolts between the diff and the axle housing.
really, returning to stock should not be a thought you overly have when doing this and you'd need to keep and weld back on the ends you cut off the front cross member to return it to stock in both cases, but with the fabtech one, it would take some real skill to weld that cast piece back in and also, I have a hard time imagining their replacement for that mount being as strong as the factory one.
I honestly only see subtle differences in most of them. rough country, zone, bds, and skyjacker all seem the same. fabtech is the same besides that cut and extra bracket. rancho has a one piece drop bracket that is very appealing to me, but really that's it's only difference.
if you are packaging shocks and coil overs, some are more of a deal than others. to me, pick the cheapest one that gives you what's most important to you.
