Default 2010 5.4L Ticking When Accelerating

I know this topic has been discussed in other threads on here, But I couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for.

I have a 2010 F150 with the 5.4L and 71000 miles on it. When I am in a drive through or next to buildings and accelerate, There is a ticking noise coming from the engine. I don't hear it at idle, Just when I accelerate and it goes faster the more I accelerate. When I'm out on the open road I don't really hear it much.

I have read it could be cam phasers, Exhaust manifold leak, or loose spark plug. Anyone have any idea what it could be?

Lifter tick. Also, depending on how loud it is it could be the injectors ticking too. My old '08 w/ the 5.4 sounded pretty bad in the drive through. Surprisingly my '12 with the 5.0 has a similar tick but not nearly as loud.

Have your VCT phasers checked. Sounds like the common tick you are describing.

Start with the cheap/easy stuff first. I'd start with the exhaust manifold leak then go from there.

On my '04 5.4 it would keep blowing parts of the manifold gasket out. The manifold itself was not cracked but you could see carbon on the block. Also when it was really cold outside you could see puffs of exhaust blow where the gasket was missing.

like mattark17 said about the 5.4 blowing exhaust manifold gaskets is true and common (pretty sure the passenger side is more common?) noise from the lifters or the variable cam timing going out are common too.

I'd make sure you are using the correct weight oil and a motorcraft filter (it has a anti-drain seal that keeps oil to the VCT's) obviously use the right amount and look for carbon around the heads where the manifold is attached... you can use a match or a lighter while it's running to hold around the edges of the exhaust manifold to see if you can see any exhaust leaks. noisy injectors are fine unless you are getting CEL's saying there is a lean/rich problem. I'm not sure how one goes about checking the VCT's without removing the timing cover (which is a lot of work) but if it's an issue with those, it's going to be expensive.

my 5.4 sounded almost diesel like from the day I bought it though.
