Default F150 aerodynamics

Been looking hard at the 2011's and since the 2009 was the major change to the body, this video caught my eye. Did not realize the rear of the cab & tail gate interaction ...

  • A new chamfered shape to the rear of the cab, which incorporated the center-high-mount stop lamp. This shape helps direct aerodynamic wake over the pickup box efficiently.
  • The top of the tailgate, which angles outward to create a bold lip. This wider surface at the top of the tailgate works with the cab chamfering to direct airflow over the box efficiently.
  • The front bumper valence and spoiler design, which has been improved to better manage airflow underneath the truck without compromising off-road driving capability.

It would be nice to see that video with a 6.5 box on a Screw to see how much air is trapped at the tail gate. The 6.5 screws are very popular around my area.

This video show to a degree that a bed cover will not increase fuel mileage on a late model F150.

inside of what? the box? the test clearly shows the airflow going over the cab and hitting the top of the tailgate, not really disturbing the air in the box.

This is pretty cool to know, thanks for the link. Also check out that mythbusters episode...it was with an '04-'08 body style. But they proved an open bed actually gets better mpg than a covered one

I know the video is correct:

I drove up the PA turnpike in december with boxes in the bed, and even driving through the rain, nothing got wet. It was pretty cool

Good video, nice to see a design and performance video / thread that doesn't have anything to do with the engine or mpg's
