Installed mine last week... only problem I had was the lack of a 13mm wrench...lol. Once I got one, it went on without a hitch!

Not sure about the new style. I know the nut insert was round and the hole is goes into the tailgate is oval. So that's why I had to put the bolt almost all the way in and not the 3/4" as it say in instructions or the online video. Also I read a review on Amazon where someone else had to do the same. This is where I learned how to get the nut insert to work correctly. Only took me about 15 mins for install.

No, unless new pics are wrong, the older unit attached differently on the top bolt

I haven't seen on this post, I admit I didn't read all 60+ pages, but I installed the 'new' style DeeZee tailgate assist. It has been only a couple months and the nutsert has loosened up. I have seen where some remove it and have put a nut on the back side, using a straight wrench tape.
My solution, similar, but different. I used a 12 inch breaker bar with a 10mm socket on the end. I wanted to add a washer, so I took some electrical tape around the end, sticking up past the end of the socket. Cut it like a flower and pressed the washer onto it. To hold the nut(with nylon insert) closer to the end of the socket I put another one behind it. Lined it up with the hole, put the ball end bolt(13mm) with a washer, into the nut inside. Tightened everything up. Was great till I realized I dropped the 'extra' nut in the tailgate and had to fish it out.

mines still tight after a year and a half, but i did tighten the nutsert more than 9-11 turns. everything says its for the drivers side only. why couldnt it go on the passenger side? everything seems the same, even the nutsert hole. just flip everything around. maybe ill put one on both sides. its all about symmetry

I went ahead and got a tailgate assist. Bought it on Ebay from AutoAnything for $29.99 including free overnight shipping. Bought it on 7/17, had it in my hand 7/18, and installed on 7/20. I went ahead and didn't even use the nutsert like the directions say. I used a nut and washer on the inside of the tailgate. I know it has only been on for a day, but I already love it.

Curious why you guys install this nifty device? I've only had my new truck 2 days but I see no need? While at the Ford dealer, I lowered the tailgate and was surprised that its "light as a feather" compared to overall smaller tailgate on my Nissan Frontier. Has Ford recently switched to aluminum as used on the hood? I'm clueless...

I got it to prevent my kids from slamming it and to lower slow enough to catch things that might be left on he bumper that could dent the tailgate.

Plus it's nice to just pull the handle and walk away and finish grabbing things to put back there.
