I can hear the ticking and knocking in the original post and the loud ticking in the 2nd one. And no, it doesn't sound normal. Well, the knock doesn't. The ticking sounds like injectors but its not my call to make but a stethoscope or long rod would help to narrow it down. I agree the knock sounds lower end. It also sounds like its either 1 cylinder or a main bearing. Being as its more pronounced in the wheel well (it was for me atleast) its probably in 3 or 4. I would atleast take it in and get it documented by the dealer and save your paperwork they give you.

I have a brand new 14 with the 5.0 with 750 miles on it and will get a video of it tomorrow. Its raining like crazy here so it would be drowned out but I do not believe I have the tick or the knock.

My thought as well -- less than 20 hours now until it's considered gone forever by the police...

If its only happening at idle, its most likely nothing to worry about ... if you're under warranty go get it checked out. The sounds could be anything from valve-train noise to exhaust leaks IMO ... does not sound like rods or pistons hitting anything (again, if it were you would really know it above idle and when making power). I'll video my new '14 5.0 and post it. These 5.0 motors are not blowing up in the Mustangs nor in other F-150's ... the 4.6L in my '07 Mustang makes all kinds of racket at idle, normal ops and runs great.

I'll try and get a clip of mine once the weather clears up. Only noise mine makes is the injectors clicking. Has a tiny noise when cold but goes away once it gets a little heat in it.

Posted this on the other "5.0 knock" thread today. I haven't been real active on this forum lately, but had to check on another issue I'm having lately. Hope this helps--here's the link:

FYI--My problem was obviously not the in 5.0 motor, but rather the 4.6….

Just to go on record here ... but mine DOES have a "tick" ... so did my 5.4 Triton on my 2008 FX4. Neither engine ever sounded like it was a problem, or something was "wrong" ... it was just a ticking sound that ran in perfect harmony with the engine ... faster RPM, faster tick, slower RPM, slower ticking. It's just something about how it's designed, I guess.

I got rid of the 2008 at 97,500 miles ... engine was still running flawlessly. I have almost 12K miles on my 2014, and it too still runs like the day I drove it off the lot with 21 miles on it.

Bottom line for me is, I ain't worried at all about the ticking. I would tell anyone else to not worry either.

I would say mine sound's just like the video that mike-up posted, and YES that is absolutely the NEW STANDARD of quiet. Gone are the days of opening the hood and having to look at the pulleys to see if the engine is running. insanely high fuel pressures, OHCs, and emission standards have resulted in engines with a loud top end. They could be made to be quieter, but they would cost more and have less power. Lastly, I have been around Fords for a good part of my 57 years, and they have always been just a little louder than the bowtie brigade.

My 2011 5.0 developed a noticeable knock at idle around 20k mi. 3 different dealer mechanics told me it was "normal" and it was the variable cam timing solenoids. True or not....I don't know. Doesn't sound right though.

Actually my engine is pretty quite, a lot quieter than the previous 2010 F150 5.4L 3 Valve truck.

I had to stick my phone right into the wheel well to get a good sound clip so it sounds louder than it does a few feet away.
