I was told by a Ford tech that the fuel injectors have a teflon coating and that adding a cleaner would damage the teflon coating.

There are a few threads on this, if not more. Tends to be a cold weather/cold climate thing (outside of a true injector issue). There could and probably have been other parts of the country affected. I live in a warm climate. During the winter I had the smell of gas in the oil. The overall level in the oil pan was not noticeably different during that time. Once the weather turned warm (hot now), I haven't had this issue and I have the dship check it every 500 or so miles. There is a TSB out for the issue, but tends to be used in colder climate trucks, I believe based on what my dship told me. Seems like quite a few Canadians on the site weighed in on this issue. I'm not too concerned. The smell of gas is not always an indication that there's a massive problem, as a little gas goes a long way from an odor perspective. You can always have the liquid analyzed, if you have any concerns. This has been my experience, so that's all I can tell you concerning my truck.

My buddy is the head of the service department of a Ford dealer here in Cali and he says they're not getting too many Ecos back for drivetrain issues.. its a pretty even mix. and im at about 35k and haven't had any issues. though I do throw in the injector cleaner gas additive here and there when I remember..
