It does blow.
That makes the most sense to me given what I have read here, and the fact that gas station owners seem to be clueless about and blame the card, while the card issuer says it's the station.
No matter what it is, it's annoying. So far I have been able to just do a second transaction right away, but it still sucks.

On my trip back to Ohio from South Texas I filled up at a Shell station and it stopped at $90. So I put my credit card back in and no problem, filled it the rest of the way.

We have two stations in our little town back in Ohio. Both the same brand. The biggest station shuts off at $100. The small one has no limit. I wonder if the big station knows how much business it loses in this area of pickups, big trucks, and motor homes. Word has got around and you can't hardly get in the pumps at the little station.

What in the heck are they going to do when gas is $5 a gallon?

I am at the point where I try to fill up when my fuel tank is about 1/4 left. Takes 23 gallons and it's $86. Guess it eases the $100 cut off pain. lol

east coast of Canada and most of the pumps shut off around 125 or 150. Other day the truck was just below 1/4 and I put 85 Cdn in and it did not raise it past the 3/4 mark....sickening but hey I did not buy it for it's incredible fuel efficiency.

This is what I do. I just go inside and there is no limit. Of course I only do it when I think I'll hit the limit

I think (pretty sure actually) that I am still quicker doing two transactions outside.

I often find, when I am traveling out of my local area, that the double swipe does not work. That I find extremely annoying. I called Discover Card about the second swipe not working but they blamed it on the network the gas stations use. Twice now on recent trips, I've had to dig out another card to get past the $75 limit used by most stations along I-95 and I-81.

It has not happened yet, but worst case I always have 3 CC's in my wallet. To maximize the cash back, LOL.

I just got back from germany today.

1.649 euro per litre = 2.18 US per litre x 3.78 = 8.24 US /gallon. That would be a $296 fill up with a 36 gallon tank.
I saw one F150, an earlier gen Lightning. That guy must loveeeeee his truck
