Default Current gear display toggle?

I have a 2013 XLT with column shift. It has tow/haul and +/- controls on the shift lever to shift gears in manual mode.

On the drive to work today, I had the driver side computer dooflatchie in Trip A/B mode, and it was showing me what gear I was in. I distinctly remember looking at that display. On the way home, no display. The only way I can get the current gear display to come up is to shift into manual mode. As soon as I shift out, the display goes away.

I haven't figured out what the deal is with this display. If there's a way to toggle it, I'm doing it by accident. If it's supposed to be there all the time, then it's glitching by turning off randomly, and if it's never supposed to be there in automatic mode, then it's glitching by turning on randomly.

I'm scratching my head trying to figure this out, which is sad, since in addition to being a redneck truck driver, I'm also a software developer. I could do better. I wish Ford would open the source and let us hack our own trucks. I'd have mine running Linux.

I don't know about on the column shifter, but on the console shifter, you just have to push the + button to toggle the gear # indicators. I would assume it is the same on the column. When you put it in drive, just push +

Exerpted from the 2013 F-150 owner's manual ...
PRS (Progressive Range Selection)

With the gearshift lever in D (Drive), press the – button to active PRS.
The available and selected gears will be indicated on the instrument
cluster.

All available gears will be displayed with the current gear indicated.
Press the – button again to lock out gears beginning with the highest
gear. Example: press the – button twice to lock out 6th and 5th gears.
Only the available gears will be displayed and the transmission will
automatically shift between the available gears. Press the + button to
unlock gears to allow the transmission to shift to higher gears. The
transmission will shift automatically within the gear range you select.
NOTE: The buttons to press are on the gearshift lever.

Don't have one (owner's manual) ?

And if you want it to "remember" that setting the next time you start it, go to Vehicle Settings on the LCD display and find 'Display Memory' On/Off and check the On box.

Thanks everybody. Yeah, I have the manual, but why read the manual when you can be driving the truck?
