Lightbulb Cross-program keys?

I'm going to buy a 3rd key, but before that I just thought:
Would it be possible to cross-program the keys of another vehicle?

Let's say I take one of the wife's Escape keys and try to program it on my F150... Would that work?
Would that particular key now be able to start both vehicles?

Probably not as the PATS ID is probably exclusive to that vehicle, so you could program it to to hers and it will work but not on yours and vice versa.

So, if I understand correctly, the vehicle PATS ID gets "written" on the key chip?
Then I can see how it would not work...

Edit:
I also just thought the keys are cut different.. d'oh!

There are certain other keys that will work, I believe that some people have had success with the EDGE key.

As far as making them working in multiple vehicles, the key ID is stored in the truck (which is why you need all the keys when you want to program any), not the other way around, so it could potentially work.

I know it was possible on vehicles with the older PATS, I'm assuming it'll work now (all that's changed is the encryption level). My parents had a Ford Explorer and a Mercury Sable. The found out by accident that both vehicles had the same key cut but wouldn't start the opposite vehicle because of PATS. They tried programming the keys and it worked! They had all four keys start both vehicles. Based on this, I figure it's the vehicle that learns the key, not the other way around...

That is what I envisioned, it would be cool, but I guess the ignition key cylinder would need to be changed in one of them... Not worth it.

Hi! I bought this from an E-bay seller. You need two (2) already programmed keys to program the new one. Had it cut at a local locksmith. >http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BRAND...item3f06af0b2e

Also bought one of these from same seller. >http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT
