Well that cover held salty water I guess. Rest of the truck is okay.

Don't be so quick to blame it on a "northern truck." My 2014 has the same issue (South Florida). This has to be a more common problem. Go look under your hood and report back.

My southern(New Orleans) truck with 20K miles and the bolts look brand new!

They probably were happy as hell that you were only complaining about rusty valve cover bolts and not the rusty exhaust manifolds.

Default Update?

So your dealer replaced these under the powertrain warranty I take it? Did they do a good job? No oil leaks I hope... I have the same issue on my 2011 5.0 with 26k, and I am considering having the dealer replace these as well.

we bought a car from up north last year, didn't even think to pull the engine cover to look at it before we plopped down the cash. Every fastener on that POS looked like the bolts above.
The biggest issue however was the sensors looked like that too. I would go back out there and look at anything and everything thats attached to the engine to see if it needs to be replaced since you already know that ford agrees that its an issue.

My 2011 has the same issue. I'll have to take it up with the dealership. It's a little disappointing to see they don't use a quality stainless bolt. It's only three years old and the bolts look like hell. Good to know the repair was covered. Thanks for sharing your experience. It's probably fairly common.

I encourage you both to reach out to your local dealers for this concern. Use this to locate one nearby and schedule an appointment; please let me know how it goes. I'll be more than happy to research additional options, if necessary.

I'll be on the lookout for any updates!
