Well I just got the Carfax on it. said that it had been in a minor accident in 2010 to the rear. The air bags didn't deploy...driven away from the scene
Now I'm wondering if I should even buy it!

Hi, my 2010 5.4 supercab now has about 44km or 27k miles. First 3 to 4 years were great...the last year or so not so much. I tow a trailer about 6000lbs loaded periodically over relatively short distances & it tows great. The 5.4 is a great motor for towing with decent mid-range power. On the downside, the last year or two has seen a number of repairs needed, most being under warranty thankfully. The worst is the manifolds for which I have had one replaced in 2013 and just had both done two weeks ago. Also have had the clutches in the posi rear replaced, the lower portion of the steering shaft and a lower ball joint. Also had some rust on the top side of the pickup bed underneath the plastic cover. Even though it was under 3 years old at the time Ford Canada wouldn't fix it....said my Xtang solid trifold cover caused it....lol. It's vibrating again now starting off so it might be the clutches once again. I still like the truck but am getting nervous about hanging on to it much beyond the expirary of the powertrain warranty in August. Others have had better luck but I would get it checked thoroughly, especially the manifolds. Good luck.

Man I know what you are feeling. I was looking for a used XLT 4x4 supercrew with low mileage. They just want so much for the used f150s. Especially so with the 4x4
Just XLT was difficult to find and lariats with low mileage they were asking damn near what I could get a new 2014 xlt for. I ended up going new because of that.

I looked at used trucks before I bought a 2013 new (which I traded to get my wife a new car). A 2012 4wd supercab used with 14k miles was $28k. I bought a new 2013 4wd supercrew for $32k after rebates and a little haggling. I couldn't get them any lower on the used truck. I tried. Then walked. When the rebates are high, it seems like it's a better value to buy new rather than used since the prices are so high on the used trucks.
When I was truck shopping, I test drove 2 2010's with the 5.4. Both had a spark knock type noise at low rpm, one worse than the other. The one that had more spark knock did have a Diesel engine type sound at idle. I assume both had cam phaser problems and were probably traded in because of it. One had around 60k miles, the other around 70k. My brother in law had a 2010 that needed the engine replaced 2 yrs after he bought it new. The check engine light came on and he ignored it because he had to be at work several hundred miles away. He said it had something to do with cam phasers. He traded it in on a 2013 silverado (which he hated) and is now back in a 2014 5.0 f150. Those are my only experiences with the 3 valve 5.4, but because of them I personally would not buy one. Some people have had good luck with them I'm sure, but the came phaser issue in those engines scares me away from them.
Long story short, I definitely agree with the guy who said to listen for the diesel like sound. Listen for spark knock also.

Try expanding your search area a bit. The last three trucks that I bought, I traveled a minimum of two hours away and up to four hours away. I don't mind driving out of state to get a good deal. Of course, the dealer will have to be willing to do a long distance transaction and potentially value your trade sight unseen, if you have one. You will also have to evaluate whether the trip is worth it based on the limited information that you have. The last three trucks that I bought were all priced at about private-party or between private-party and trade. Two of the three were at Ford dealers also. I can never find what I am looking for locally, and in the rare instance something pops up, the price is from a dealer that has a huge hard-on.
I wouldn't worry so much about accident damage if it has been repaired properly. You really have to inspect closely and shake them down with a good test drive, though.
As for engine troubles, I've had four trucks with the 5.4L. One a 2V and the other three 3V. None of them have been opened up for any kind of work. The 2V I had 183k on when I sold it with the original engine and transmission. Could not stop that truck. Other than the weird shifting issues that I had with my 2010, that is the extent of mechanical problems that I have had.
