Cold Air Intakes
I have a 2009 Fx4 supercab with the 5.4, with exhaust.
I was wondering if anyone has put a cold air intake on there truck.
I looked at a roush and airaid and they both use the stock tube and put a cone and box on the end.. Has anyone put the full tube and fliter on theres?
Thanks Jake

I heard on these newer trucks if you run a C.A.I you have to also run a programmer or your truck runs to rich / lean, can;t remeber which. I have really been debating on doing 1.

it depends on the intake, some do, some do not. If it is large enough then yes you will need one, otherwise you will be sucking in to much air for the computer to compensate on the stock tune.

I'll check into more tommorow, but as of right now i'd say go with the K&N in that link i posted above. It's a whole replacement for the entire intake setup, not just a filter replacement. I do some work on the side for BMC Performance and typically we have a lot of options but thats mostly for your mustangs/camaros/challengers etc. Typicallly JLT makes a great intake as does companies like granatelli. Only problem is them coming out with something for the 2009+ models. If you do need a tune, expect the whole package to cost around $600+ because your basically buying the intake and a program/scanner tool which is typically $250-$300 by itself. My personal favorite has always been from C&L but again, not sure if they have one out yet, or what their plans are for making one. Again, i'll try and get in touch with them. Personally i'm going to go for the K&N without the tune, less stuff to mess with, and less things to go wrong. My father has an 07 hemi with the K&N and it REALLY woke up. No tune, and it sounds great and it just plain works great too.

I had an AFE CAI on my 09, and had to pull it off as I had not retuned it, and it was causing a surging as the engine was running too lean. In Canada if the dealer deems an aftermarket piece has caused damage, they can void your warranty because of it, so on their high recommendation I removed it.
To tell you the truth... sounded better, but I honestly think it harmed acceleration, particularly when the surging would start, as obviously the computer was changing fuel/air ratios trying to compensate for the new readings, and actually impeding a power gain. A tune would likely fix this.
