Cluster Swap
Ok so I had this Idea of swapping the digital cluster in our 2014 STX out for the fancy LCD cluster. Now I was concerned because I had not seen a 3.7 with the LCD cluster in the 3.7 STX only the 5.0, so I was not sure it would work. Undeterred and a bit scared I went on the hunt the first thing I found is salvage yards have changed dramatically. I had a salvage yard guy flat out refuse to sell me a cluster unless it was the exact PT# that came out of the truck, He went on for 30 minutes about how it had to be that way and Ford was notorious for that. I took his advice and went home as a perused through the interwebs I began to notice that the part # where very similar throughout the cluster I figured out the part number layout with the year first and the the line followed by the actual part# and convinced myself it would work I located a local guy that had an awesome project "coyote swap into a F100" and was parting out what was left of the donor truck and snagged the LCD cluster and interface switch. I was curious so I noted the AS BULT codes in forscan for my cluster and installed the new to me cluster. I worked the display light up and was feeding info. I was excited but still curious I checked for DTC's none where found, however the binary codes for the two clusters are different. just a thought if anyone else was thinking about the same swap. by the way the cluster came out of a 2012 and mine is a 2014 I have hooked up my computer to a 2010 and the whole system was different so I am assuming that 2011 is the first year for the LCD and newer style system. If anyone is a forscan guru here I would be interested in an evaluation plus some hints on what else is possible.
I swapped my STX cluster for one out of an XLT. Had to change the left swith set on the steering wheel. Everything worked plug and play. At my next service, I had the dealer change the as built data on the new cluster to match my truck.
I ended up doing some more reading and downloaded a spreadsheet with more info I found that the new cluster did throw some codes but nothing that triggered the CEL. My first thought was just copy my IPC to the new cluster. But upon further inspection I found that I was getting codes from the BCM one had to do with a locker that my truck did not have so I wrote the code back to the 2wd no locker code and it said it was an invalid checksum I did it anyway and it cleared the code one of the other codes is in the compass compass now the truck does not have one but I did land myself a RVD/Compass rear view and headliner harness from a you pull it so I am guessing the compass control is in the mirror so hopefully the back up camera will be the next project. I could not find a code for the compass so I did not want to change too much. the third code is improper something or other from the BCM so I am figuring its looking for a compass that is not their. Now If I could only find the OEM camera and rear harness for a good price I would be set. although I am expecting problems due to the harness and the RVD being out of a 2010 and the camera Pinout and everything else may be different.
Also the mileage reprogram was way more expensive than I think it should have been 160$. I got the cluster for 100$ so that puts me all in at 260ish. Would have been way nicer to find a cluster that was closer to my mileage.
