My 2013 "clunks" too, but its not overly loud and nothing that I would call concerning. I actually like hearing it, gives me the feeling that there's something mechanically solid engaging.

I always try and engage 4wd when sitting still or going no more then 20 km/h, and once its engaged I don't hear any other clunks of noises from the drivetrain.

Well my '11 had clunked... one too many times I guess. It just cost me a new transfer case. I've owned a good dozen trucks prior to this one. This is the ONLY truck that has ever 'clunked' like this. I call BS for the people saying this is 'normal'. I've had Fords & GMs and NEVER had a truck do this since the auto-engage option was available. I use 4wd maybe 15-20 times a year max. Usually in winter.

Just went to use my 4wd again today with the new transfer case... and guess what. BANG again!! I pushed the switch, rolled forward a few feet, slowly got in the gas... and BANG. I have a feeling that the blown transfer case is the result of an engagement issue. Gonna bring it back to the garage because I'm scared crappppless to switch to 4wd 'on the fly' any more.

Since I'm sure someone will ask, the truck never did this when it was new, so it's not 'normal' Ford thing... and I never used to let it roll forward before giving some gas. That's something I've just started. If you were in a situation where you REALLY needed that 4wd help, you'd probably not be able to roll those extra feet while you wait for the engagement anyways.

Due to new snow I was using mine today. Sometimes I heard it, sometimes it did nothing. All this new snow does is constantly remind me how much the OEM tires suck *****.

Since this is my first 4WD I'm not sure what is normal, but with my truck (2012 XLT Scab) I only hear a quiet "click", I can't hear it at all when the radio is on.

The only 4x4 switching issues I have had is twice when I got stuck in snow in reverse, I would switch to 4hi while in reverse and I would hear grinding. As soon as I shifted back to drive it engaged OK so it would seem my truck doesn't like to engage while in reverse.

Wow, mine is pretty quite actually. We got snow and ice and I went back between 4A and 4H several times just to see how it did. Pretty quite here.

I think people are confusing the regular click with the floor shaking bang when after waiting 10 seconds you give it some gas and bang bang feels like the tranny is on the ground

I only had the floor shaking bang once, it was when I switched to 4x4 at 30mph and then gave it a bit of gas. Rest of the time is it a clunk. Power train warranty should cover it.

You're not joking about the tranny on the ground bang...

Its a close 2nd to that 1st-2nd low speed transmission shift that feels like a Mac truck rear-ended you. Thankfully, after half a dozen tranny re-programs, it hasn't done that in the last 6 months.

Mine started out like that vozafay. I figured the dealer would look at me like an idiot if I went in and couldn't make it repeat the noise. Hope yours doesn't get worse & worse the way mine did. I'm PARANOID to shift at any speed over a snail crawl now.
