Default Check Engine Light

Story: Just got rid of my 4x4 Tacoma due to me lifting it and having issues (even with low miles on lift) with suspension, steering, driveshaft shutter, etc. So I buy this 2011 FX4 which I love with 33k miles, luxury pkg and drive it for maybe 300 miles and my check engine light pops on. Have an appointment on Wednesday at the dealer (5 days behind to even schedule a car in...). Seems to be running just fine, just wondering if any known issues out there with these lights?

Already tried to search other threads but no luck. Thanks for any input.

Those silly lights come on when something isn't right. Like a loose gas cap. And about a hundred other things. I'm guessing gas cap though because it's simple.

Doesn't have a gas cap.

Neither does mine but the gas flap can make the light come on. Just one example. Maybe it's a catalytic converter. Any guesses?

Could be one of many things. My recommendation is to take it to your local auto parts store, have them pull the code(s) if they're able to do so, report back to the forum on code number and description and see what others can lead it to be with possibly their experience on their own trucks before taking it in to get repaired or simple enough to do on your own if mechanically inclined doing so.

Thanks for the info. First thought was gas cap and I also said it doesn't have one. No biggie I will let the dealer figure it out and update. Thanks

Depending on where you live...cold etc. mine comes on from time to time in extreme cold weather like -35/-40 or so...it usually goes away after a couple of starts so I never bother taking it to the dealer.

It's usually something silly. Wait a few days and it will probably go away.

It is cold right now (30/40); and have been driving it a lot more to see if it would go away, but still on and strong. Living north of Houston sucks because these dealers are days backed up!!

Without the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) no meaningful insight is possible.

As was mentioned by GraveDigger85, have a local parts store (e.g. AutoZone) pull the code. *And ignore their diagnosis.
