2010 XLT

BOTH rear cab corners are rusting out. Truck has 37,000 miles on it. I use it as a truck, but don't abuse it and I take good care of it.

Needless to say, I'm very disappointed. Ford has agreed to fix it under my remaining corrosion warranty, so I'm happy that Ford stepped up no questions asked. I have an awesome dealership too that has always backed me. They have an excellent body shop, so that's a plus as well.

I've never had this happen so quickly on any of my other vehicles, so I'm hoping it was just some poor metal and that it won't be a problem again in the future. I know central PA winters are tough, but this isn't acceptable. I have buddies with the same truck and some older and they have no cancer. Lucky me! Don't get me wrong, I love this truck. I'm more sad than mad.

Have any of you had to deal with this yet?

My mind keeps going back to that leaking 3rd brake light I had to have fixed. Could water have run down to the corners, collected there and started the process. Thoughts?

that looks like surface rust. can you poke a knife or screwdriver through it?

I didn't try that out of fear of making it worse until it can be fixed. The fact that it is happening to both corners and neither corner had any chips exposing bare metal makes me think its more than surface rust and that it's coming from the inside out.

When I first noticed it, the paint was all intact and it looked like a spot weld was starting to bubble and ooze rust like a zit from hell. Lol. It's bizarre that it is identical on both sides.

not surprising, this is becoming more and more of an issue for these trucks. I have actually repaired a few myself. this is happening due to the tape over the holes on the rocker panels holding in moisture, then rusting the corners out.

I suspected that darn tape too. Should it be removed? How can I prevent a repeat once fixed? Can the corners be filled with a foam that doesn't absorb water like the low expansion Great Stuff? Just thinking "aloud" here. Lol

That sucks man, glad they are taking care of you.

As for brake light, just RTV it. Mine leaked after two years and I just got a recon one and added black RTV and dry as a bone since!

Thank you RES4CUE! I was hoping you'd chime in. My 3rd brake light leak was fixed under warranty and my inside has been dry since. However, is it really fixed? My interior is dry, but could it now be running down to the cab corners?

I'm not sure. When mine leaked it was following the contour of the headliner and going down both corners. I was going to warranty mine but kept reading that even after it being warrantied that there was still leaks so I sucked it up and make it an upgrade and peace of mind thing at the same time.

I have been hearing of he corners of the rear window letting water in, that would probably get right down there in those corners.

I guess I'll be pulling the tape off the holes! Lol

Hard for me to make a good suggestion here. Remove it all? Tape it all? Not totally sure. I'll text one of my former co workers, and see what they are doing for it. I'll let you know, when I hear back.

I only repaired a few. And I quit Ford 3 months ago, after 6 years. No fault of Ford's, just the paint dept there had 1 too many painters, so not enough work for me. I was supposed to be the f150 guy too, they were going to send me to Detroit or whatever, to be certified for the 15's.
