BuiltRight Bedside Rack System - Need design input!
Hi, I have the 5.5' bed and a Retrax Pro bed cover. I think the mounting could interfere with your bed side mounting system. Not sure that I personally would want this, but if I did, I would only want these behind the wheel wells. I other words, only the two rear mounts. Front mounts might not fit with the roll top canister of my Retrax Pro anyway.
Hi, after looking at pictures of my bed cover [Retrax Pro] I have a slightly different view. I still don't need or have room for the front brackets. My bed cover runs with the bed rail and I would be able to remove my rear clamp and use yours instead without any modifications.

If you got rid of the top row of holes between the two clamps, it would work for people to use their tonneaus. This is presuming the panel goes right to the lower edge of the bed rails. You would still have 3 points of mounting while giving a decent sized window for different tonneau manufacturers.

Here is a thread on it. I would take pics but mine have custom mounts attached to them. Its basically a series of small holes built into the side of the bed.

All of this input is awesome and is precisely why I posted. Very helpful. I'll address the responses one by one as I have time to research them a bit, but I don't disagree with any of it. It would be great if the mounting were as straight forward as in the 15+, but the mounting points just aren't there on these trucks. Have any of you removed the bed rail cap on your trucks for one reason or another? Would you be comfortable doing that if installation required it (and then reassemble)?
A nice solution if I was simply doing this myself would be to drill a few holes and install rivet nuts of some sort, but I don't think that's something I'd want to require in order to use the product.
Very quickly, regarding the tie downs and strap interference, two solutions are to cut loops into the smaller bracket for use as a replacement tie down point or to just use one of the loops in the rack near the tie down.
Will continue to iterate on these!

As far as drilling holes I don't like to modify anything like that on my truck. Nothing permanent.
Prototypes are made, to test and see if the rail clamps would be strong enough. Still experimenting with figuring out if there's a way to clamp to the underside of the rail and provide the rigidity that we need. Thought you'd like to see!
