Blown Rear Shock
Pulled into work the other day and saw fluid under my truck. I take a closer look and see the rear left shock is leaking fluid (9,000) miles on the truck. It's being replaced under warranty no problem.
I saw online, the oem shocks are $40 a piece roughly. I have max town already but I have the thought of replacing the max tow shocks with the heavy duty payload shocks. Would this help support heavier loads better and support more weight? Any thought on this?

My trucks got about 15000 miles on it now. I blew the rear left at about 9000 and now the rear right is leaking. Im thinking about just doing an upgrade to a set of ranchos as it clearly looks like the factory ones are pretty crappy.
I think you'd be better off with a good set of aftermarket ones.

In a way I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one but this still concerns me. I figured the heavy duty payload shocks would be built better to handle the extra weight capacity.
Anyone have any recommendations of good after market shocks that are good for towing/hauling (do ranchos improve ride only or are able to withstand higher payload tolerances that stock?).

The stock shocks are cheap imho regardless of payload. Installing aftermarket shocks such as Rancho or Bilstein make a world of difference on these trucks and, in the case of the rears, is very easy to do. I went with Bilsteins and could not believe the ride difference. This is one area where Ford has cut corners. Updating these is an inexpensive mod that makes a huge improvement.
factory dual piston shocks are weak, do yourself a favor and replace rear with a monotube shock either Billies or Rancho. the Ranchos are on sale or if you buy 4 a factory rebate. 15% off Ranchos on sale. i would and have bought the MT7000s series, the 9000s are same shock with adjustability.

shocks are made for load capacity unless you get like a load leveler shock that has the coil spring made with it. the monotubes will help bounce the leaf springs are what carries the wait. usually stock shocks are not true double action, they are made for a smoother ride. take a factory shock and compress it and see how easy it is, go the web and their are comparisons of the twin tube design to the single.
