I just wish we could get any fuel up this way that is ethanol free. Everything up here is 10% ethanol. BAH!! I hate the crap. Ruins mileage, kills two stroke engines, and raises food prices.

I am going to be stupid here. I got 23.3mpg last tank(record). So if I go to 93 I can go up to 25mpg?

I run 89 pretty much every tank now. Mileage didn't change a bit from 87 but I feel the truck to be a little more responsive and there's less soot at the tailpipe.
Also trying a little test between a top tier brand (Petro Canada) and a cheaper brand (Ultramar).
Was hoping to see a mileage increase going to the PC 89 but on my 3rd tank and there is no change so far.

Even at 0.40 more its only $10.40 more per tank for premium. IMO if you can afford to buy, maintain, and most of all keep fuel in a $40K truck that extra $10.40 isn't killing the wallet and is definitely worth the possibility of additional mileage.

Can't go wrong by using the factory recommended octane.

Default Additional Suggestion for Gas Mileage

If I can add another tweak here:
I had previously posted a query on mileage improvements and was advised I had done pretty much all I could do without going to a chip (which would affect warranty). Then, I recently switched to gas without ethanol. No endorsement of a particular company here, but if you go to pure-gas.org, you can find a whole potful of stations that sell the product. The site pretty much covers the whole country,
PaBear, that might help you, too, since PA has a bunch of the stations. It costs an average of about $.15 more per gallon for the respective octane levels, so you have to decide whether or not it's worth it for you. For those outside the lower 48, I'm told Exxon Premium does not have ethanol, though the US version does. Why, who knows? As to other manufacturers, there's little consistency. Additional feedback from others would be useful.
Anyway, when I added it to my 2011 5.0 FX4, I saw an immediate gain in mileage of .5 per gallon (added a little under half on a 36 gallon tank). Since then, if I have a full tank of ethanol-free, I'm seeing almost a full mile per gallon improvement. As a result, if I stay at the speed limit or a little below, my mileage average for the last two tanks has now reached 19.9. As soon as I go back to regular with ethanol, I see a mileage decrease under the same conditions. I use some of the hypermiling techniques from our Escape Hybrid, but overall, just common-sense driving without getting aggressive.
Hope this is of use.

Bob

Thanks Bob! Yeah, I've used the pure-gas site before, the problem is the nearest station to my home base is 40+ miles away, so it really doesn't make sense most of the time. I'm heading on a trip this week up near Syracuse, NY though and it looks like there are a lot of stations there. Probably will need to fill up around then, so going to see if I can make it happen and see if there is a noticeable difference. I have a strong suspicion this is going to be quite evident. I just wish the "greenies" would realize that E10 blend and E85 are not really good overall. You have to burn more to get the same amount of miles and all-in-all for true E85, you have to use more energy to produce it then you typically get out of it. Another "great idea" gone horribly wrong.

I'm only seeing 1mpg difference between the two. And it's much easier to fill the 36 gallon tank on 87 than 93 when you consider the pump only lets me get $100 at a time. And it's too aggravating to Swype the card again to top off premium.

The money is not always the object as many here like to harp on!

I don't know what the 36 gallon tank is like personally, but I rarely let my tank get below half I'm not saying I haven't been below half a tank or even all but empty I just prefer to keep it towards the full side of the tank.
