Default Bed swap

Got a 2014 fx4 with a 6.5 bed, will a 5.5 bed bolt right on without fabrication? Mechanic said it wouldnt but don't think he put any effort looking into it.

Don't know about bolting on, but the short bed trucks have a different wheelbase than the long beds. Check the difference between the back of cab and the wheel well on each. If it did bolt up, you would likely have a gap between the bed and cab.

Because it doesn't require effort to realize the shortened length of the bed is from between the wheel well and the cab. You could bolt it on, and have roughly a foot of dead space between the front of the box and the cab. I'm sure the holes would also not line up.

Why would you want to swap?

Yeap. You're gunna have a gap between the cab and the bed, roughly 'bout a foot. She wouldn't look none too pretty.
Ifn' you think me and the guy up above are crazy, have a gander at a 6.5 box truck and a 5.5 box truck and give a mental measure of the distance from the back of the cab to the wheel well. The truck frames have different lengths.
Just because I'm stoopid and curious, whatchu wanna switch out your bed to a smaller one for anyway???

I like the shorter beds look but got mine at a good price and gave me a good amount for my trade in that's why I bought it. I did notice the length difference between the rear whee and cab but figured I'd ask to see if there was a truck into making it fit. I believe the old model f150's the extra length of the bed was after the rear wheel so beds could be swapped with no issue but just wanted to double check. Thanks everyone for your replies

Ill chime in here as well, even if the bed bolted up and the cab/box distance didnt change then you will have the foot at the rear of frame and the bumper will look dumb. That being said anything is possible the show Trucks made a short box Dirtymax from a long bed by chopping the frame and used factory parts and looked cool. Its the same principle as will a 36" door fit in a 48" frame, yea it can but will look stupid till the gaps are fixed. In this day in time anything is possible.

The old ones follow the same method of removing space from in front of the wheel well, there has never been a pickup built with a box that overhangs the frame, waiting for someone to swap a short bed on with ease.
