Can a 04-08 OEM stainless bed extender be adapted to an 09? Or would I be opening a can of worms?

Yes. I did the exact thing for my 2010. I put an extender from of 04. I did buy new bushings for the holes and self tapping mounting hardware from the dealer. I think i paid about $30 bucks for the 2 mounting bolts and 4 bushings...All the holes are already there.
