I was told by my Dealer that the stowable bed extender can only be purchased on a truck from the factory (i.e., they cannot order it as an accessory). I bought one on ebay from an individual.

ok, if the vehicle gets in an accident and damaged the extender. how can a dealer order this part? sending the truck to the factory for a bed extender replacement???

BTW, was the installation easy?

I'm sure in a case like that the shop could order one from the factory. They probably refuse to keep stock of them in their parts inventory is all.

I ran into a deal like that with another car I used to own. The only people that could actually get the part I needed was a *certified* body shop...go figure.

Took a while for the Heavy Duty's stowable extender to become available as a separate part. I'm sure the F150's will be eventually.

If you really want the stow-able bed extender now then see if you can find a body shop that is willing to order it for you since your dealer says they can not. Every part on these trucks is available some where, its just a matter of finding who can/will order them for you. If you want to wait for the parts then they will eventually be available through your dealers parts department, or on line.

the dealer in town has a full service body shop + parts and services. I guess my only option is to wait for it to be available on the shelf. thanks

I also got mine off ebay, email the guys selling the 250 stowable extenders, they may or may not have access to the f150 versions....i know for a fact they can order them too, when I bought mine, the guy dropped it and broke it, so he ordered a new side for me. they are pricey though, $400......very easy to install, i would have had 0 trouble if I didnt have the bedliner, the bedliner install worked fine, it just didnt line the divets up with the holes in the bed right...

You might also try an independent body shop to get the parts, or if there is another Ford dealer reasonably close by try them. It seems from reading on here that different dealers seem to know different things, like with the integrated brake controller. A lot of these guys dealers were saying it had to be installed at the factory and the parts could not be ordered. Now through this site we have all found out that that is not the case, and they can be ordered through the parts department. My guess is some dealers just wait for all the info to come down the pipe from Ford and others go out of their way and look for it to help themselves and their customers.
