Another Brake Failure
Was sitting at a light yesterday and pushed on the pedal to stretch my leg. When I did that I felt a pop and the pedal went to the floor. Had enough brakes to make it the rest of the way home where I discovered that the rubber brake hose on my driver side front wheel had burst.
I am filing this under the "**** happens" category - but I find it a little odd that a 5 year old hose would fail already. Just a friendly reminder to keep an eye on yours. Luckily I was close to home, could have been much worse.

One could argue that pushing the pedal to the floor shouldn't overstress the hydraulic brake system. A hard emergency stop on the highway would have the pedal to the floor, if that overstresses the brake hose to the point of rupture, that's highly dangerous.
I don't think that needs to be argued at all. I'm no engineer - but a brake system should be designed to operate at its maximum limits.

Pushing it to the floor occasionally is actually a good practice because it keeps the piston in the master cylinder from getting crud built up where it normally wouldn't travel if you never put it to the floor. When you finally do push it all the way down (bleeding the brakes is a typical scenario), that build up on the piston can damage the seals and require a MC rebuild/replacement.
