Default Adding premium options to a more basic truck.

Hello,

I have recently (about a year ago) purchased a 13 F150 XL. I think the truck is awesome but I definitely want to do some upgrades to it.

I know higher Trim models have things like turn signals and courtesy lights in the mirrors. My XL does not but has the cut outs for them. My question is, are these trucks already wired for these lights? Are they plug and play or would I need to do more than just find the lights and plug them in?

Also, I currently have a manual turn **** to turn on the headlights. Is there a way to convert these to automatic lights?

Thanks in advance!

You can do auto headlights if you can use forscan and if you have the plug for the sensor (just take out the dummy cap center dash and the plug would be there.)

You can also potentially get turn signals and puddle lamps, this typically requires running wire from one side to the other. Or, getting different mirros. I needed tow mirrors and bought them from 1aauto.com and plugged them in and the turn signals and puddle lamps worked without me doing anything. I habe an STX, so also has basic features.

The best upgrade was getting the gauge cluster from a higher trim with the screen. That with a higher level trim steering wheel made it feel more fancy

So the gauge clusters are interchangable even with that nice fancy screen? If so, awesome. Thanks for the reply.

They are. My gauge cluster came from a Lariat 4x4. I have a RWD STX. I had to use Forscan to disable some things, like back up sensors, camera and the 4x4 error message. I picked it solely on how many miles it had on the odometer. Ahead of where mine was, so I didn't need to send it off to a shop and pay $100+ to get the mileage corrected. I just kept tools in the car and planned accordingly to change it when it matched my mileage exactly.

The other thing you can add is remote start.

So it sounds to me like literally all features require you to plug in the required equipment and, depending on the feature, use forscan to enable them. With that, is there some kind of guide to what settings I need to change with forscan to enable these? I've done some googling for this information and ended up more confused than when I began.

Thanks!

Yes, Forscan can be confusing at first. There is a nice sticky thread all about forscan i would recommend reading, there is also a master speadsheet on the thread so you try to figure out what codes you need to change to enable the features you are looking for.

Correct. They have made it a lot easier to use, a lot of things are now drop down menus that you just enable/disable and don't need to change code.

Some upgrade options will depend on the original list of options. An example is my '11 XL which has elec. windows and locks requiring (at the time) the wiring harness that included the unused Keyless Keypad connector. Otherwise as above.

2014 STX here. Between Ebay, pick n' pulls, members here, and Forscan I've added XLT gauge cluster, trailer brake, power sliding rear window, XLT headliner with overhead storage bin (did this so I had the proper spot to mount the window switch), center jumpseat with top storage cubby, and door keypad (the real one, not that stick-on BS).

Gauge cluster is easy swap, don't forget to change the steering wheel switch if you get one with the color screen. You'll need ForScan possibly. The truck I got my cluster from didn't have an e-locker so I had to turn it back on for the cluster to show it properly.

Keypad and trailer brake needed ForScan as well.
