AC keeps Freezing
Define old man?? Is 62 an old man? I mean I was going 75 mph! My turn signal wasn’t on for 5 miles either! LOL
I just got off the phone with my mechanic and it is the Evap Temp Sensor. The Sensor is reading 187 degrees Fahrenheit parked with the key on. With the truck at idle it reads 127 degrees Fahrenheit. As I was taking the truck to leave at his shop last night it it was reading 20 degrees out of the vent. Like it has been discussed, the whole Evap system has to be pulled and replaced. You can’t just it pull it out and replace it with a new sensor because Ford doesn’t sell the sensor separately. They sell the entire Evap system.
I am going to manually adjust the air temp when I it dip int to 20’s to avoid it from freezing. Thankfully, I use the truck for short trips.

I have a 2011 XLT with 5.0 and about 130k. I purchased it used about 5 years ago. The AC has been the worse issue about this truck. I live in Atlanta so the AC is very important to have working properly. I have spent about $2000 over the years on trying to repair it. The AC compressor failed and was replaced. There was an issue with the plug on the compressor that shorted about 18 months. The mechanic replaced it no charge. A year later the Evap coil was replaced. The AC is working but now it is having a sensor or computer issue. On short trips around town it gets cold! I left a kitchen thermometer in a vent to the right of the steering wheel and I have seen it get in the 20’s. On long trips, the coil must freeze because it will stop blowing cold air. I will turn off AC and crank up the fan to high speed. I will get some cold air out of the vents while the coil is thawing out. I have seen and heard ice crystals coming out the vents.
i don’t mind bringing the truck into the mechanic. I would like to have a better understanding of what I should expect to be the issue that needs adjusting or replacing. Will Forscan or a scanner help me understand what is going on? I have read about the BIG HVAC thread where can I find this?
Thank You!

There is a resistor mod which can bias it to certain temperature. There is a $3 volume control/variable resistor you can adjust to trick the computer to a reasonable temperature.
It could even cool more - there are lots of sensors in there to control the compressor so it saves a bit of gas.
But any truck is going to drop mileage if you drive it aggressively. Getting a 6k lbs brick up to speed fast isn't cheap,
He offered and I declined. He replace an AC compressor that was out of warranty that the compressor plug failed in the compressor. The AC is working great. Sadly, the sensor is bad.. The issue I need to make sure of is the evap coils don’t freeze.
