? about locking rear axle
I am thinking of getting the 3.73 locking rear axle.I had someone tell me that the locker only works in 4 low? Is this true? If that is the case then I don't need the locker. I don't think I even had my Chevy in 4 low?
..it will help going down steep rocky trails too.
Or up steep sandy trails.
Down those too.
Or moderate sandy or rocky trails.
Oh...mud too.
and places steep rocky/sandy/muddy places there are no trails.
Won't help a bit for running old ladies of the road or hitting deer at 70 MPH with your big gay grill though...

I realized my last post was entirely S-A and didn't contribute anything to your thread. So, Sultan-ribbing aside, the locker is not something you are likely to use everyday. You'll have to be in some pretty nasty conditions to need it - but then you'll have it.
You may see other threads/posts about the LSD being a better choice for everyday use because the locker is open when not locked. I would agree with this if it wasn't for the advanced TSC systems these trucks have.
I've driven in some pretty nasty snow, in 2wd, with no weight in the bed, and an "open" rear diff (traditionally, about the worst possible vehicle set-up for driving in snow), and didn't have any problems. The TSC reacted perfectly and kept me from even feeling the need to go into 4wd.
The 4wd set-up is effective enough that I've been in some pretty rocky mud holes, in 4wd, and saw the same thing.
Knowing what I know now, locker or no-locker wouldn't be a deal breaker for me but, since the TSC basically reduces the LSD to a redundancy, if the locker is an option on the truck you're buying, I say get it. It will be there if you need it.

I used mine when it snowed............ and when I go off road hunting, I got stuck once in some wet grass and i had to lock it to get going, its worth it in my opinnion. BUT its not necessary all the time, long days on the road and I would have gotten a L/S but where I hunt you almost have to have a locker to get there. way to rutty and steep hills.
