6th Gear Question
I have a 2013 F150. It drives excellent....but here is the question:
The truck will not change into 6th gear when I am accelerating. Sometimes it happens when I am going from 4th to 5th. This is not WOT. I haven't tested WOT due to not wanting any speeding tickets just to see if it will change from 5th to 6th.
OK, this is how it works. I depress the accelerator slightly to moderately (again, not WOT). It changes gears from 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5. I am not changing my acceleration at all and it will not go into 6th...until I take my foot off of the accelerator. Then it changes fine.
A tech at the Ford House took it for a drive with me and said it drives just fine. I attempted to have duplicate the situation, but he had to let off the accelerator because of a slow moving vehicle.
I would think the normal progression would be for the truck to change into 6th gear according to how much pressure is being placed on the accelerator to the driving conditions hill, flat, etc.
The only reason I know that it was happening is because I looked down and my gear showed 5th and i felt to due the higher rpms and lack of foot pressure to the accelerator the transmission should have changed gears.
Maybe I am overtly vehicle sensitive.
I think I am going to test this theory out a little more before I start to believe there is an issue.
Thanks for any input.

Mine is like that too, it rushes to 5th but will only go to 6th with very light throttle. Sometimes it seems worse than normal and I'll actually let off completely just to see it change. When I do this and reapply throttle, it usually goes right back to 5th. Guess it just knows what it needs at the time. I wouldn't worry.
Ditto here, I can get mine into 6th at no speed slower than 45mph and at that slow speed just enough throttle to maintain speed it'll stay but give it a little gas and it drops to 5th. On the hwy at speeds over 50 it will stay in 6th until I hit an over pass or bridge. I'm pretty sure it's normal.
Does it say anything in the manual? I haven't looked.

6th is a pretty deep overdrive gear ratio. The truck will get to 5th as soon as it can to help with the EPA test and the resulting mpg.............but it will not, and should not shift to 6th when accelerating or at lower speeds without lugging, and therefor damaging the engine.....your truck is just fine.
5th and 6th gear are both overdrive, would probably lug at slower speeds. mine usually want shift into 6th till about 50. try disconnecting your battery and set computer back to factory default. i have do this on my wifes Flex. adaptive learning needs to be reset and drives like new, shifts alot better.

Thanks for the replies. I am glad I am not the only one. It is strange a person would have to release pressure from the accelerator to changed gears when it isn't necessary in the 1st four gears.
Thanks for the insight.

I agree I wouldnt worry about it. If I am cruising around town at 35 and am coasting or using a light accel. to keep my speed it will, on occasion, be in 6th. But your ECM knows when to shift based on % Engine Load and RPM. And possibly more variables as well.
