Did you sign a written estimate, and if so, how much was it for? State laws vary but in ours they can only exceed that amount by 10% without your approval before doing the work.

That is definitely not ok for them to hold your truck hostage if you did not sign paperwork or verbally tell them to fix it after they told you the cost ahead of time. Usually diagnostic fees are around $100. If they keep giving you a hard time it would be worth the $200 to show up there WITH a lawyer literally at your side. They tend to take the lawyer standing there a little more seriously than the threat of getting one.

You can get a new engine installed for less than that. They are trying to screw you over.

I saw a link to fix the timing chain guide myself. Does anyone of this link. Thinking about just paying the $1500 and doing it myself. Never trusting that dealership again

Personally, I'd rather pay an attorney the $1500 than give those scum suckers a dime. I've retained an attorney on a deal like that once--if they'd given me a bill for a reasonable amount, I'd've just paid it without a second thought, but they tried to screw me, so I let the attorney tell them to pound sand and that was all they got. (And they had the gall to have their collections guy call me; he couldn't understand "this is my attorney's phone number," but he did figure out what a dial tone was. At least I assume he did; I'm not sure he was bright enough to figure out how doorknobs work.)

If the procedure for changing the guides on the EB35 is anything like the procedure for the 5.4 3V, it's not terribly difficult, just time consuming and a bit awkward. Fortunately, it was my younger brother's truck, so he had to do most of the awkward stuff.

I would also call Ford customer service and start a case with them. This sounds like blatantly over charging which ford told their dealerships not to do.

Answer the question about the paperwork you signed. Seems like you're just rolling over. $1500 to diagnose a problem is absurd. If you pay it it's because they saw an easy mark.

They can't hold your truck for ransom if you didn't agree to the work.

If they had to dig in that far there should have been a phone call first sounds fishy especially to check a timing chain.do they have a diesel tech working on your truck 1500 is going rate to remove a 250 or 350 cab. But this is new to me that ford did this to a 150. Do not roll over. Definitely call ford corporate like said before and get a lawyer lined up. I would even go to another dealer to get a written estimate for a timing chain to help shed some light on this grossly overinflated repair they are trying to push.
