Default 5star shifting sucks!

Returned my truck to stock so I could get the oil changed today and forgot how good the truck shifted stock, with the 87 tow tune the truck shifts ridiculously hard from 1st to 2nd, and after than u can barely feel the shifts from 3-6, anybody else have this issue? I've called 5star a couple times and they can't seem to make it right, thinking of trying MPT...

I have both 5* and MPT and don't have shifting issues at all like you describe, the only time the shifting hits hard is when I program the 93 race tune in and it's supposed to hit like a shift kit has been installed.

Have you given it some time after flashing the tune? They recommend at least 100 miles so the system relearns your driving pattern.

Usually a performance or tow tune will shift hard first to second, it's keeping the clutches in the tranny pressurized so the truck doesn't lag, you don't want the lag as it puts stress on the tranny. Notice that at stock you never feel the shifts because it shifts early so you don't get the thud. Now the firm shift is t doing any damage but yes it can annoy you from stock shifting. It will actually make the tranny last longer because it shifts firm and quick unlike slow and loose. It's all about preference, have you gone into your tuner and maybe bump shift percentage down, try a -5 percent then try -10 see what you like. This is all what I have been told lol

I was skeptical of running a MPT tune due to reviews from users saying they were more aggressive. I've so far tried the performance chill tune and i feel like I liked the canned tune sct offers better I do like the firm shifts though more so then the canned tune
I'm trying the performance race next fill up.

Do a KAM reset and drive the truck easy for 50-100 miles, if you drive it hard right after a tune it will learn that shifting, just as if you drive it smooth it will learn that shifting.
As Rnlcomp said too, takes a good 100 miles for it to settle in and adapt, if you're hammering on it during that time your trans shifting will be harsher.
Last time I loaded my tune I was ***** out at every stop light and shifting was harsh, loaded a tune recently, about 150 miles ago and drove easy for first 100ish and shifting is a lot smoother. Either way though I don't think it's ever going to be as smooth/soft as stock tune as someone else said with tow/preformance tune

Thats another thing I've never liked, I bought my tuner from 5* and everything is locked out so I can't make any changes!
