Is the 5.0 a junk engine?

Any engine is an expensive fix these days out of warranty, if someone catastrophic happens.

On more meds than ymeski
I remember the whole "my 5.0l is the same as the Mustang 5.0l" thing back in the eighties. Some things are the same, some different but it is not the exact same motor. That can alter requirements like the type of oil needed.

I have a 2011 5.0, my truck has 32k now but has had this cold start knock or tick since new. It goes away after 5-10 minutes and doesn't come back until the motor is completely cold again. I've been running full-syn 5w20 since 1k miles and changing every 7500.
Truck burns about 1 qt of oil between a 7500 mile oil change duration. Other than that it's super reliable, will pull off 22 mpg's on an all flat highway with cruise set at 68. No smoke at startup or anything. Whatever the noise is it ain't hurting anything at this point.
My old '08 Chevy 2500 HD, gas 6.0 had a knock/tick too, but it was constant hot/ cold. Drove that from 0-60k mile and three years and never one issue with that motor. Yet it seemed to get 9-10 mpg no matter how you drove.

Regarding engine noise - Between the ...
FoMoCo did try to address some of the engine bay NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) by installing fuel injector system insulators.
- cam phasers clacking.
- normal FEAD whirring.
- injector clicking.
- the fact that there is no engine/intake cover.
etc., etc., etc..
