Forget about it. My 2013 STX has had the knock for as long as I can remember. Now has 189K and still runs like new and gets 18.5 mpg. Only hear the knocking will at idle.

Thought I'd visit the neighborhood again.
I have news for ya. My 2018 5.0 sounds just like my 2014 5.0.

Now I did have a good engine in the 14, so I'm hoping my good luck will carry on. For those that hear, that faint knocking in the lower half of the engine .
Forget about it, because 4 1/2 years later the new 5.0 sounds the same and runs the same!
Except it spins the tires shifting into 2nd gear.....

Anything in the bed? There has to be SOME weight to get traction.

Roughly 300 lbs worth of tools. Same as what was in the 14.
A new truck is nice & I'm grateful as hell to afford it, but I'm missing my 14 something awful...

I'm not trying to Thread Jack, but don't rush to trade up from those 13-14's
Or let me put it this way. If I had this 5.0 in my 14. It would've been the truck I took to my grave.

BTW... Ford now uses 5w-30... in this 5.0.

My truck started knocking (or at least I noticed it) last year, I took it in to a dealer and they were ZERO help, claimed it was normal, and the technician said "the engine has hundreds of moving parts, it is going to make some noise". They claimed they would no longer diagnose the issue unless I wanted to pay. I had several videos of my truck doing it, but the service writer could care less and did not even look at them, because "she doesn't have speakers on her computer" and when I told her I could give her some headphones, she said she could not do that. So, I figured I was one of those individuals who was SOL.

Well, this year it has gotten to the point I could no longer stand it, and figured I would take it in to another dealership for a second opinion. At this point it seems that was a good decision. I dropped it off Monday morning, and got the usual "we will take a look but we do not hear anything abnormal, these engines make some noise" hooplah and thought I was trending in the same direction as last time. By now I had collected videos of my truck doing it over the past 2 years and emailed them all to him, including a recent one where the knocking was pretty substantially. I think I am FINALLY getting somewhere as I called him end of the day Monday and he acknowledged the noise, claimed his tech heard it, and they're doing some tests and contacting Ford to determine next steps. He told me to come back by and pick up a loaner vehicle as they would need my truck a few days. While I have not received word of any repairs being done or a final diagnosis, I am glad to have found a dealership that seems to be willing to help, hopefully. It seems this is the ticket to getting this issue repaired, finding a dealership that cares and wants to help; hard in today's automotive market. The service writer also claimed they HAVE seen this before and most dealerships KNOW about the issue but try to avoid it due to the complexity of the repair, cost, and risks of being married to a vehicle they replaced an engine in.

Unhappy 2014 F-150 STX 5.0 knocking

2014 F-150 STX 5.0 with 46k Miles. Just bought this truck two weeks ago and now its making this low end knocking sound mostly while idling. Does this sound normal? Doesnt use oil from what i can tell and the oil was changed before i bought it at the dealership. Still has the factory warranty until 60k miles.

Doesn't sound normal to me, sounds like the bottom end knock I had before they replaced my short block. I had mine in more than once for this, took it in at about the same mileage you have and took it back 6 months later and they replaced the short block. Mine would not knock until it started to warm up as the thermo expansion took place. On passenger side between #2 and# 3 I believe.

Same here mine won’t do it until the engine is warm. And it’s weird because at times it won’t do it for a day or so then all of a sudden it will start doing it again. I’m sure it won’t do it tomorrow when I take it to show the dealer 😡. How long it take to get your new block put in?

Keep at it, bug the **** out of them if you have to, and if necessary, try other dealers. I finally found one willing to help me so it seems. There is definitely something wrong, whether it affects engine longevity or not, it drove me nuts knowing there was something wrong and the dealers were trying to pretend there wasn't. Mine started around 60K or so with a subtle knock during warm up in cold weather, and sometimes, as in your case, when it was warm. But, after the engine was warmed up it would stop. What really made me press even further this year was it got worse where it would knock really bad sometimes and it did it no matter what the temperature. Being I only have 16K left on my CPO (84K on odometer) and a bit less than a year, I was not going to risk the engine experiencing serious damage after my warranty period, because I know I would receive no help.

I am waiting on the final prognosis of my truck, but as of Thursday of last week they were pulling the valve cover and oil pan to inspect the engine and discuss with Ford their course of action. The 2017 Explorer they got me in sure is nice, though

Ok thank you so much for your help. I went to the dealership today and of course it didn’t make a single noise while I was there. I really appreciate the response and I may ask more questions down the road if it does it again. Thanks!
