After putting about 3-4000 miles on it I began hearing the quite noticeable, sickening knock from the bottom end. Called the dealer about it and they basically told me "that sucks. Call ford". So I drove it for the rest of last year trying to convince myself it was getting better, even though it definitely wasn't. So at 45000 miles back in February I figured I better get it looked at by a ford dealer down the road. After 2 hours and a $105 "diagnostic fee" I found out my oil level was good, my tire pressure was right on, and the knock was perfectly normal. Fast forward to about a week and a half ago, I took it to the ford dealer where we bought the wife's Edge. And by some miricle, their tech heard a definite knock that the other dealership couldn't seem to hear. So I drove of in the loaner car they supplied me and they got on the horn to ford, who instructed them to tear into it. Upon tear down, ford told them to order a long block. So hopefully this saga is over, and this is not the beginning of a new chapter! I understand dealerships probably get hosed on warrenty work so I certainly appreciate these guys taking care of me even though I didn't buy this truck there. Maybe the Edge purchase helped my cause, but they have definitely earned my buisness in the future.BTW, the dealership is Germain Ford in Beavercreek, Ohio. Excellent service (including the edge purchase) and good people. The service department has been great and helpful for both me and the wife.
I really think it comes down to a good tech listening and really caring and not just in a hurry to pass you off on these noises. I am going to have another local dealer under warranty next year do the deactivation procedure as I have already talked to them about it. i have a very faint knock that comes and goes so I will drive this until a little before the warranty runs out that way if I do have a issue it should be more noticeable and I will get another year out of this one. Truck runs strong so its hard to believe something is wrong, but some may be worse than others as all engines have a certain degree of cylinder bore distortion from what Ive googled. Just obviously some of these are out of the tolerance spec.

What happened is when they reinstalled the valve cover, they pinched the gasket between the cover and the engine block, letting oil leak from that point. They have to take the cover off and re-gasket it (like $12). Also my guess is that the tech guy forced the solenoid ends through during the cover install and nicked the gasket around it, or the guy didn't bolt down the solenoid unit securely. Either way it is a result of poor servicing skills (or lack there of).

That's not a bad idea holding off and getting all you can out of the motor before taking it in. I probably should have done the same and drove this one through the summer. But after I took it in to the first dealer and they said it was normal when I was thinking it was fairly obvious I thought "here we go with the run around" and I got a little nervous. I think you're absolutely right about some techs (NOT all, mind you) just trying to convince people things like that are normal and probably 80% of the time it works in their favor and they can go on making better money not doing warranty work. Hell, I can't blame em! I didn't want to be fighting dealerships right down to the 5 year warranty wire next spring so when I found this dealer who immediately stepped up and heard the obvious problem, I figured I better jump.

Yes I want mine to be very noticeable if I do have a issue so the diagnosis may come right out. If you have a dealer that's says yes and yours is pretty noticeable like some on here then heck yes get her done! I would do the same.

Well two weeks ago my remanufactured motor came in and the tech put it in my truck, this motor sounded worst than the original one. This one sounded like a diesel. After 10 weeks in the shop the dealership finally got a new reman ordered. Ford customer service sucks! They have been giving me the run around. The dealer is great.

Why is ford putting remanufactured ones in instead of a factory crate engine ?

I just got my truck back from the dealership this past Tuesday after getting the new engine put in. The paperwork has it listed as ford part # (EL3Z-6006-C) "service engine". A Google search shows it as a 2014 model replacement engine. So I'm assuming it's new from ford and not remanufactured?

This is what I am talking about, of course a remanufactured cost less, but a new factory engine like this invoice shows is what all should be getting. someone said at one time the 5.0's were on back order. I do not want a remanufactured installed if they diagnose a bad block, cause you may get the same issue back. i know online the cost is about 6 grand for a new factory 5.0

Question for you people with a noisy 5.0 engine.
How many of you actually have had it fail?
And when they do fail are they tossing a rod through the block?
Blowing a head off?
Or what?
