5w-30 is not going to hurt anything in these trucks.

I changed to 5W-30 about 2 years ago. The reason was pretty simple. Every other vehicle in the driveway uses 5W-30 and I can get 5W-30 at Costco cheap. When I made the change, it was $25 for two 5 qt jugs, it's $40 now, but still cheaper than other alternatives. They don't carry 5W-20 in that oil.

I made the change at about 100,000 miles. I'm at 137,000 now and I can't tell any difference in performance or fuel mileage. Just saving some money.

Kirkland Signature 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil, 5-quart, 2-pack | Costco

It is made in the same refinery as this from Walmart.

Super Tech High Mileage Full Synthetic SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil, 5 Quarts - Walmart.com

It used to be cheaper at Costco, but apparently not any longer, Walmart is a few pennies cheaper. Walmart does carry it in 1 qt bottles and I keep a couple of those around too.

The bearings, oil pump, VCT solenoids, etc. In fact there are very few parts that are different between 1st gen F150 and Mustang 5.0's.

I used to have a tapping sound in my old mazda 3i that was ever present with several other motor oils (mobil, castrol, etc..) I was recommended switching to Pennzoil platinum or better in an old mazda forum i used to frequent. Several of the guys there had reviewed various oils and determined pennzoil for the price was the best of the cheaper oils off the shelf. The best oil they rated was the amsoil signature series which costs more per quart. I tried pennzoil and the engine tapping went away. I started switching it into my wifes car, and my parents cars. They all seemed to run better and quieter. No different in my current f150 and my wifes explorer. They seemed to run smoother and quiet down after switching to pennzoil after the first oil change.

They have a dyno. What testing do they do to determine the long term wear effects of different oils? Or do they sit in a circle on stools and conjecture about what they've heard and what myths they believe?

i like project farm. he did a 1 loss elimination tournament on a lot of brands of oils. he also in other videos sent off oil to be tested before use and after use to see how the oil changed.
the video above is from the final 2. Pennzoil vs Amsoil.
