Default 4wd issues

I have a 2011 F150 FX4. It is lifted on 35s, CAI, Muffler, and Tuned.

I'm having an issue changing into 4wd both on the fly and when stationary. As I attempt to change it, I will flash saying check 4wd than intermittently change into the desired mode. It actually changed into 4L while going 25 MPH when I tried to change into 4H in the rain. When I check the codes on my tuner it says that there are no codes found, but it does show the wrench on the dash display. The wrench goes away when I change back into 2wd.

Has anybody else had this problem or know what the issue might be?

Do you have a lift/level? Could be something with the IWE's.

or

Could be the switch going bad, that has popped up a few times on the forums

or

Could be the tune messing with it for some weird reason, try going stock and see if it still happens.

when I tried to change into 4H in the rain.
You're not supposed to be operating in 4X4 on pavement, even wet pavement. I don't think that doing so is the cause of this problem, but it ain't helping. It will cause you problems eventually if you've been doing this.

I've never had a problem engaging/disengaging 4wd on dry, wet or snow covered pavement. For short distances just to make sure things are working properly.

With this truck or my previous 4wd ranger. I agree with jdunk. Search IWE issues, that is where I would start. It's pretty common.

Jdunk he does have a lift. With 35's.

Ya, I figured he has a lift or maybe he bought one of those 3" leveling kits and that is his issue.

I have a question related to this. If the IWEs don’t engage for some reason, would the computer know and throw a code or turn the wrench light on? Or are all the sensors in the transfer case? If all are on the transfer case, then it is not an issue with his IWEs. All the threads I read no one mentioned a wrench or CEL come on when they had problems with that part of the 4wd system.

Just asking as when mine had the grinding noise for the IWEs I had no codes or light. If it would, maybe I caught it early enough that the computer didn’t sense it yet.

From looking at the IWE's and the vacuum lines when I had issues. It looks like there isn't a sensor down there. At least I didn't see any, just the vacuum lines. That might explain why there's no codes thrown.

I could be wrong and I'm sure someone will correct me.

I didn't have any codes or wrench either. Just noise.

I just went through this same issue with my 2011 FX4. Damn thing would shift its self into 4 LO at 25 or 30 miles an hour when I selected HI. It ended up being the transfer case shift motor, put in a new one and good to go. May be a good idea to change the TC fluid as well, you probably had a little grinding going in there.

It almost has to be the shift motor, and its probably throwing erroneous gear position signals. I seriously doubt they can shift into low at 25 or 30 mph. It would make a hideous bang and probably scatter the T-case.
