There are different kinds of remote starts. One kind uses the key, or a separate fob, to remote start. Some are one-way, some are bi-directional, where you get back an indicator that the remote start was successful.

What is being described is the VSS (Vehicle Security System) and RMU (Remote Access Module). With these installed, you get a shock sensor alarm AND the ability to have remote start via cellphone for $49.99 a year (plus tax).

The VSS is the Vehicle Security System - a security modules with shock sensor that plugs into the truck and acts as hub for other modules, such as Two-Way long range remote start (antenna and fob) or the RMU
The RMU is Remote Messaging Unit, basically a Cell Phone interface module. You can use a phone or online app to connect to it and remote start the truck, or have it text you when the alarm is triggered on your truck.

While all you need is the keys for remote start, the range is very limited, the same as lock/unlock. Personally I would recommend that you get the Remote Start (RMST) Antenna for a better range.
Also, if you got with the two way module, it comes with a fob and you do not need new keys. Same for the RMU, you do not need new keys as it goes thru your phone.

You can find the install guide below, the IDS portion for the Remote Start activation can be replaced with Forscan. The RMU activation has to be done by a dealer.

Dealers that sell the RMU will activate it remotely for free. It is currently scarce as Ford has a new, $17 per month with 2 year contract solution.

how would one know if they have VSS? if I have VSS then I already have the antenna in this ebay post referenced above and only need the keys? or is that a longer range antenna?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/222935224226?rmvSB=true

or as a cheaper option, with 1 r/s key, this is all I need?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OEM-201...lajbZX&vxp=mtr

I also found just the key but it's only a $25 difference..

VSS is a square box. That picture is a longer range antenna (which can be purchased for ~$20 as I recall.

To see if you have VSS (you don't), open driver's window. Close door, hit lock button. Wait 30 seconds, reach him and smack steering wheel (not horn) with your palm hard. If horn starts beeping, you have VSS.

Or climb under dash and see if something is plugged into your OBDII port.

soooo... do I need VSS for the 4-button remote key kit to work? I'm so confused, why are there so many different remote starts

For the App-Link, you do not need the first item, the antenna. Serves zero purpose. Finding mixed info on this. My supplier wasn't sure, but sent it anyway. Some think it's needed to not throw an error code, others because the cellular module transmits to the TPMS. I installed it AFTER getting my cellular system working.

I know the IDS procedure requires the antenna to be present to activate Remote Start, However, Forscan does not.

I Installed the VSS with RMU on my friend's Truck without the Antenna and no problems at 1st, then he started having issues starting it while parked at the airport, he also noticed that at the airport his keyfob would not unlock the truck unless you were right on top of it. I figured, probably RF interference from the nearby tower. So we added the antenna to see if it improved thing and it did, the problem went away.
While not necessary it does improve reception and extends the range of your keyfob, I say for $30 why not install it.
