On the 2013 and 2014 trucks, the vacuum line to the IWEs is attached to the spindle via a tie strap.
These lines crack right at the point of the strap and when you turn the wheel, the crack opens up - vacuum is lost and the IWEs partiaslly engage or try to engage thus causing a grinding sound.

I had the same tech for the last 2 installs. He said he's done over 50 of these and seemed very knowledgeable.

I mentioned that to the tech, and he explained the vacuum test. He pulls vacuum, leaves it sit. Then turns wheel lock to lock, pulls on vacuum lines to open possible cracks etc, and lets it sit some more. He seemed to understand all the known causes, but mine has been a difficult one.

I have a 2012 S-crew 4x4 Platinum with this very problem. I began by replacing my brake pads (front and back) when this didn't fix it, I tested the IWE. I followed a very well written write up on here explaining how to test the IWE for issues. I rented a vacuum gauge from Autozone (the gauge is actually free just put a deposit down and when you bring it back Autozone credits the full amount of the deposit) Anyway I couldn't find any vacuum leaks or issues on any components of the IWE. And yes, I tested the IWE vacuum solenoid. Vacuum present when selector switch in 2wd and vacuum off when selector switch in 4wd. I'm now researching any threads I can to try to resolve this problem. BTW...when outdoor temperatures reaches 65 degrees F and up this noise/vibration quits happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 2011 XLT Supercab that was in the dealership for another issue and after a test drive they called and said there was an issue with the right front wheel. They did a smoke test of the IWE vacuum line and found a leak where it went over the frame behind the suspension. I bought a vacuum line kit and replaced it myself. The old line was very brittle and broke into numerous pieces upon removal. Since replacement I've had no issues.

I have a 2012 S -crew 4x4 5.0L that does the same thing you have described. When the temperature drops below 60 degrees F I get this rubbing/vibration in what seems like the driver side front wheel. I've tested the IWE vacuum and all components test good. I haven't replaced the IWE's yet but that may be my next move. I've also read this could be caused by a bad wheel hub assembly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Mine was, IWE, spindle knuckles?, and surprisingly my clutch wasnt disengaging properly at lower speeds. Under warranty they changed those 3 parts and the problem went away. When I turned left at low speeds it would grind, then when I decelerate at lower speeds with or without brake the "dragging" occured (clutch issue) which felt similar to the grind from the IWE/Spindles when turning left but happened without wheel being turned at lower speeds decelerating/braking.

So my '14 Limited has been exhibiting what I would call a bad bearing noise but only when it is cold and it is especially noticeable when I am leaving work in the parking garage and braking seems to amplify the noise as well. Every now and then I will get a small single "pop" when turning but it has to be backing out of the driveway or some kind of compression in the front suspension when turning. Again, this is only when it is cold outside (below 45 Deg F) and only when the truck if first driven after sitting. The time after it sits seems to vary with how cold it is, the colder it gets the less time is has to site to reproduce the sound.

I check the IWE's by jacking the front of the truck up and rotating the tires with the engine off (half shafts spun with the tires) and with the engine running (half shafts did not spin with the tires) so they appear to function as designed. I did not check for any leaks on the system as this is only doing this a low speeds and the vacuum is good at low speeds. The noise does not change if in 4x4 so I am pretty much ruling the IWE's out but I cannot be 100% being I have not fully checked the system for a leak.

I am leaning towards this being one or both wheel bearings starting to go out but I do not want to throw $400 in parts at it and not solve the problem.

The best way I can describe it is the same as wheel bearing noise - but its not constant.. I believe its coming from the right side of the truck, and I'm inclined to say its coming more from the rear.

I thought I had narrowed it down to happening when the vehicle was cold and the outside temperatures were cold -- but as I discovered today, thats not necessarily the case.. The truck had been warmed up, I was driving around, stopped in to a store for 5 minutes, and then when I left, the noise happened about a mile down the road.

I've had the noise show up on both acceleration and deceleration - and braking does not seem to change it. Its most noticable in 2WD - but I cant really tell if its there in 4WD due to the normal noises one hears when in 4WD.

The biggest problem is the fact that the truck is under warranty, and I cannot readily reproduce it for the dealer.. Was wondering if there was anything I should check or look for.. I've read a lot of posts about the IWE system -- but I'm not even sure if Ford still uses it on the 2013 model -- or if it has caused many problems in trucks made after 2008 or so.

I know if the dealer can't reproduce it, I'm kind of stuck. Just wondering if there is anything common that happens that would cause this type of thing
Thanks,
Rick
Sounds like the IWE isnt fully retracting due to it being faulty or vacuum leak.

I experienced it as well and replaced both IWE since they wouldnt hold vacuum due to leakage.

They also destroyed my front hub/bearing gear mesh due to lack of positive engagement. I installed the new IWE and the couldn't lock since the bearing gears were all rounded from the bad IWE.

Cheers!
