Default 2013 5.0L Engine Replacement

I have a 2013 F150 5.0L with 300,000km on the truck. I use the truck for work in the oilpatch in AB and it does take a beating. That being said, I have only done the brakes twice and replaced the water pump. Its been a great truck and I love the room in the cab for work.

The truck was running rough and threw a code. Cylinder 4 misfire. I took it to my mechanic thinking it needed new plugs. The mechanic called and said that cylinder 4 only has 90psi. He ran it wet and dry and the same thing so he knows it is something mechanical. We've decided the best route, with the mileage is probably an engine replacement. I called a shop in Edmonton and they quoted me $6800 for a rebuilt 5.0 longblock and 24hrs labour. With miscellaneous costs it came to just under $11,000. Is that a ballpark figure? My mechanic, said if I can find an engine, he'll put it in for between $1700-2000.

Can I go with a different year or different size engine or do I only have to look at 5.0L 2013 engines when I am looking at wrecker? I have been able to find some low mileage 2015 5.0L for around $4000.

2012-2014 engines should be identical. 2011 is probably a 98% match, I think they only changed minor things. 2015+ I'm not sure about but I do know that those engines had different ratings so there are likely some internal differences.

$11,000 for an engine replacement is a LOT of money for a truck that's only worth about $15,000 in perfect running condition at that mileage. I don't think I could bring myself to do that. I'd have to either buy a cheap salvage yard engine, or replace the entire truck with a newer one.

The 5.0 engines are plentiful around here since they've been around for six years now. Shop around some more and just swap the junkyard engine right in and reconnect everything.

I just went through this on my 2009 5.4. Lost a cylinder and bent a valve. I love the truck and it is in otherwise near new condition with a bunch of mild non-engine mods. I bought the truck new and it now has 187,000 miles on it.

Like you, I decided to go the route of replacement vs. fixing the old engine. I looked at two options:
1. Install an aftermarket long lock like a Jasper or other engine at my local shop. This would carry a three year unlimited mileage warranty on the engine but only 12 months on the labor. Cost estimate $8,000.
2. Install a factory Ford long block (theses are also rebuilt, there is no part number for a brand new one) at the dealer. This carries a 3 year unlimited mileage parts AND labor warranty that is good at any Ford dealer nationwide. Cost estimate $10,300.
i went with option 2 because the warranty is so much better and I’ve had less than stellar experiences with Jasper longblocks in my boats.
I have the parts and labor breakdown, but as I recall the block was $5100, the rest was labor and a few miscellaneous parts.

EDIT: I am in Virginia just outside of DC, so we probably pay a premium since everything here is more expensive.
