Default 2013 5.0 Intake tube

Has anyone tried replacing the factory intake tube on a 2011-2013 5.0 without spending $300+ on a CAI? I don't want to spend that amount of money for something that won't net that much of a power increase. Has anyone seen or heard of anyone making something from parts from a hardware store? I'm curious if it has been done leaving the factory airbox lid in place.

yes, it can be done with a few pieces of straight pvc and elbows. Common upgrade not only on fords

I came home with some 4 inch PVC and a few elbows and other bends, but there does not seem to be enough room for that size pipe and fittings. Is 3 inch sufficient for this motor? Does anyone have any pictures of their homemade intake tube?

I measured the air filter lid out and the tb to both be 3.5 inches. I can't find 3.5inch pvc anywhere. Anyone else have any ideas?

What the heck are you trying to achieve by making this mod? Your truck has a very complex computer system that monitors airflow, fuel mixture and timing. No matter what you do it will attempt to keep things about where they should be. Todays computer based cars are simply not designed for performance enhancing bolt on's. For the most part, they are a waste of money. But they sure make us feel good!

Here's what I did; bought the Airaid Jr. CAI with the Synmax Filter (no oil) from AutoAnything. This kit uses the factory airbox and is a nice, clean fit. In terms of performance gain...little to none. Gas mileage increased by 1 mpg. I made this mod because I like the how it opens up the space around the front of the motor. No funky looking silencing chambers taking up space for air circulation around the motor.

The actual I.D. of the intake tube is the same as the factory tube, so no worries about running lean etc. The factory engineers address noise before performance, and that is why the ugly silencing chambers are there. By the way, intake noise on acceleration is very minimal, in fact, most people would not notice the change in sound under the hood and in the cab. Cost: $189.

The idea is to smooth out the airflow from the airbox to the TB. Remove the 'mufflers' and corrugated tubing that cause turbulence. I know it won't make a huge difference, that's the reason why I don't want to spend 300+.

By selecting my signature banner, you will be directed to products specifically for Fords. As Combat vet mentioned, Airaid offer a tube only replacement without the cost of a complete system.

Send me a PM if you wish for a quote.

Thanks!!
