I just picked up a wrecked 2010 FX4 with a great interior. The plan right now is to swap everything over to my 2012 XLT including the center console and floor shifter. I know this isn't the ideal donor truck to start with because it's not 2011-2014, but I think I'll be able to make it work.I'm also considering purchasing a 2011+ body harness from a FX4 or higher trim package in order to facilitate the swap. For the dash it'll probably be a mix of both harnesses. I've got a copy of the 2009-2010 service manual with wiring diagrams, I've already got a copy of the 2011-2014 version.
Some of the issues I'm foreseeing:
- GEM vs. BCM (the big obvious)
- Memory module on the seat will likely need to be swapped out for one from a 2011+
- I'll need to buy a floor shifter from a 2011+ in order to get my select shift to work (might need a shifter cable too since the part numbers are different)
- It looks like there are some pretty big differences in the standard HVAC box vs. the dual zone automatic one (I might not even do this part of the swap)
It's going to be a lot of work but I'm no stranger to that. I don't mind taking my truck off the road for a bit either as I have a work vehicle and my GF's car to get around if needed. I've already had the complete interior out of my truck already and it wasn't a bad job.
Anyways, I just wanted to start a thread in order to get some advice from the guys that have already done this and to help those in the future that might want to attempt it.
I've finally got my 2010 and 2012 wiring diagrams, but only the 2010 has the Component and Connector Information section (basically the pinout diagram for each of the connectors). At this point I'm leaning away from doing the dual + automatic HVAC conversion. Reason being there are a lot of unknowns between 2010 and 2012 parts and wiring. However, if I don't do the conversion I'm going to have to figure out a way of turning on the seats via the MS-Can bus. I was thinking that I might try getting the heated seat buttons to show up on my Kenwood HU via the iDataLink. I still need to purchase a new floor shifter and shift cable, and figure out how I will wire everything in there.
A bit of a switch in direction with this one. I'm going to attempt the full conversion with a dash and body harness from a 2011 FX4. There were too many differences between the 2010 harnesses I had and my 2012. I'm waiting on the yard to pull the harnesses, hopefully they come through. I've also purchased my wrap material for the interior trim pieces that were previously silver. I'm going with 3M Satin Dark Grey to change things up a bit. I'm still undecided with which color to go with on the gloss black/ textured finish that's on the radio and shift bezels along with the door panels. For that I'm leaving towards 3M Matrix Black or Brushed Black Metallic.
Got the swap done, ran into a bunch of issues with the junk yard dash harness (lesson learned there). I ended up finding an area in the harness that was damaged with a sawsall after pulling the dash 3 times. I ran the truck for quite a while after the mod and it was great, really happy with the end results and I got a lot of compliments on the truck. When it was all said and done I could never get the defrost to work right, the windshield always fogged up. I sold the truck a year ago when I picked up a Super Duty.
Biggest piece of advise I can give you to make this easier is make sure you have access to a full parts truck, and that it's the same year as yours.
Hey there. Can anyone tell me, if I've got a 2012, can I swap in the dash harness from a 2013-2014? I have the nav screen and, am wanting to do that swap so I can drop in a sync 3 system.
Thanks in advance!
