Default 2012 Lariat - Rodent Problem

Hey guys,

It's been a while since I've been on here. Anyways, upgraded to a 2012 Lariat Ecoboost from my 2004 FX4 about 2 years ago now, and it has been another great pickup. It has about 98000 miles at the moment.

Anyways, I took ~10 days to travel home for the holidays over the last week or so. Before I left, truck was running great, as usual, and I parked it because I was planning on taking the company pickup to the airport.
Now fast forward to this morning. I hop in the pickup to head to church, and my little wrench symbol appears on my dash as I'm passing through the gate. "Check rear parking assist" I figured it was a sensor gone bad, so I continued to the church (only a 5 minute drive, less than 2 miles). Along the way I'm noticing that my pedal seems sluggish and not normal, so I pulled up the TPS on my edge tuner. At full pedal I was only getting approx. 20%. Lastly, as I had been gone for 10 days, I went to rinse the windshield... and nothing.

Long story short, I get home, and I pop the hood only to see my hood insulation torn up, and the wiring harness chewed to pieces by what I would assume is mice?

Is my best bet to take this into the dealer and have them start diagnosing what was damaged? I sprayed any exposed areas down with rodent repellent immediately as well.

Drivers side, near the master cylinder.

What a bummer, sorry to hear that. It appears that field/ pack mice got in there, which isn't uncommon in the winter time. That appears to be the main bundle of wires going through the firewall if I see the pic correctly. I would take it to a dealer/ auto shop myself as there's no telling what other damage the little rodents caused and so much may be affected as you experienced. Your insurance may cover it. Check your Mass Air Flow housing/ air filter to see if they got in there and started nesting.

FYI, In 2017, mice got in to my truck while at hunting camp in southwest MT as evidenced by the mess they made with a roll of paper towels and a hole in my trailmix bag. Thankfully that was the extent of it. I googled possible remedies and bounce dryer sheets was highly recommended. This past hunting season I placed bounce dryer sheets in and around any/ all key locations and did not keep any food in my truck. No evidence of mice in the truck, plus the truck smells good. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks guys. I'll check both with my dealer, local electric shops, and my insurance.

I did go out and pull codes with ForScan and got the following to pop up:

Diagnostic Trouble Code details

Lost communication with the PCM

Note:

DTCs that start with 'U' are faults which occur during module-to-module communication.

Modules should never be replaced based only on a 'U' code. These codes do not always indicate a problem, and can be caused by normal diagnostic functions, carried out on the vehicle.

Definitely file an insurance claim. That's going to be expensive to repair VERY expensive. I've seen a lot of rodent damage over the years but none that severe.

Take it to the dealer and file an insurance claim. My mom's car, which only gets driven a couple thousand miles a year had this same thing happen. Took it to the dealer and filed an insurance claim. New wiring harness and all is good.

Wow, that is horrible!

The codes really don't mean anything right now. You know what's wrong, half the wires are destroyed.

Yeah I was more curious to see how many modules were unable to communicate at the dash since that's where the destroyed harness runs to.

Still can't believe I was able to drive it anywhere with that wiring...

Definitely at least notify the insurance carrier first. Then get a quote and take it from there. I know someone that had a different brand and it was a small compact car. $3,000 in chewed wires. They were the soybean wires and she parked it sat morning and by Monday for work it had 3,000 in chewed wires. Contact the insurance company as a backup.

I certainly will let them know in the morning. I'm new in this area and the dealer is just up the road so I dropped it off for evaluation today.

Thanks for all the help guys.
