Default 2011 Nav Maps Update

So I got a letter from Ford a few weeks back about the newly release nav map update... For the low, low price of $199 you can get the update, my only question is: is it worth it?

The last map update I actually purchased for a GPS was for a Pioneer dashboard PC unit, and that was like a complete OS upgrade including maps for $89.

The current map version has most of the roads that I drive on, the only thing it's lacking in is the POI database, since there is a lot of construction going on around here. But there's no way to tell if the update will even have these places.

Has anyone purchased this upgrade, or any upgrade from Navteq in general in the past? And if so what are you opinions of it?

The website is navigation.com/fordmapupdate if anyone is interested. I think you get free shipping if you order before the end of the year.

Mighty proud of that update, aren't they? I didn't receive a letter and I have a 2010. There are several roads I travel on that aren't on the maps now. I wonder if these would be on there? Guess I will ask the dealer about it tomorrow.

I love in dash nav but that right there is the primary reason I chose not to get it and buy a $100 Garmin. Two years from now I can sell my old one on eBay for $50 and buy a new unit. Total cost: $50..

You buy the update and then post it online so the rest of use can download it

I have the factory nav in my Ford Lincoln MKS and the 2010 navteq update did not include any new roads in my area and from what I could tell the POI's along I-95 were still out of date. It was a waste of money.

Haha, unfortunately they ask for your head unit's serial # and application ID to buy it, so I assume that you have to enter in some sort of software serial number when you install the upgrade.

Hemigod, what part of 95 are you on? I'm right around DC in Alexandria, so I guess that would be a good indicator if you're nearby and didn't get updated POIs.

heh, the beauty of computers is that everything can be hacked I cant believe they charge 200 for an update, you can buy two new aftermarket systems for that, im sure someone already has the cracked update on a torrent somewhere, and if they dont im sure it wont be long. I just did a quick search and found a cracked update for a honda.

The outdated POI's I noted were along I-95 between Richmond and Alexandria, plus a lot of ones around the Philly area. IF I buy another update, I'll wait until I hear from someone else who bought it to see if it is more up to date or not. The Ford 2010 update DVD contained very little in the way of updates. I noted that the Navteq copyright on the 2010 update DVD was 2008, whereas the other products on the DVD were updated, like Gracenotes. The maps were the same as what was already installed in the car. And by the way, on the Navteq site, some of the missing roads were shown on their maps, so it's not like Navteq is way out of date. So try to find out the Navteq maps copyright before you buy the update.
