Can anyone tell me what type of fluid to put in there?

I know its not the LV type like the 6R80 transmission.

Cheers!

If you DO NOT have an automatic transfer case (auto 4wd). It will take 1.5qts ford Transfer Case Fluid.

Does "Torque on demand" mean the T-case with the auto 4wd position? In the back of the book on my '13 they list 2 fluids. "Transfer case fluid" for the ESOF and "Mercon LV" for the Torque on Demand. NOWHERE else in the book does the TOD term come up. In the operations section of the book (pg 220 - 223) they refer to ESOF and "2-speed automatic 4wd". I would assume this is the Torque on Demand referenced in the specifications section, but am not sure. Obviously nobody proof reads this stuff.

If you do NOT have the 4A option, then use the Motorcraft "Transfer Case Fluid".

I wonder what transfer case fluid actually is. Used to be many transfer cases used ATF. About all they needed was a oil bath to keep the chain cool.

It depends on which transfer case you have. If you have a 4A position on your switch, it actually DOES take LV. In this case there will be a sticker below the fill plug indicating such.

The transfer case fluid I have picture above is red and does smell like transmission fluid. I had read somewhere once that it was Mercon V (or some older variant of Motorcraft trans fluid) relabeled. Not sure if that is true or not.

If anything, its the older Mercon (non-V) in a new bottle. Mercon V is labeled "Do not use in transfer cases" and supposedly it can cause transfer cases to "explode" -- not my words. I would LOVE to know how this could happen.
