Default 17" or 20" wheels?

I'm in the process of upgrading my truck and am still deciding on wheels. I currently have the stock 20" wheels and just found a great deal on some 17" Raptor wheels. Which would be a better all around wheel size? I know 17" will be cheaper down the road to replace than 20" but does one offer better on road or off road performance as far as comfort or such?

My tire size choices are 305/70-17 with the Raptor wheel or 295/60-20 with my stock wheels. Both should have the exact same diameter of 33.9" which will be exactly 2" taller than my current stock wheels/tires. I'm leaning towards the Nitto Terra Graplers.

Thanks

I guess one concern with the Raptor wheels is any idea how they would look on an oxford white lariat with the pueblo gold lower two tone paint? If someone has done this I'd like to see it. Thanks again.

Because the 17s have more tire (compared to the "rubber band" style tires on the 20s), ceteris paribus, you should have a better ride on the 17" wheels and conventional tires.

True.

And for the off-road aspect, there is also better performance, as you have (again) more rubber on the sidewall, you will not be beating up the wheels as easily on rocks etc, off the paved road in mtns or desert.

This is why the Raptor comes with 17's and why most dedicated off road vehicles have small wheels 'buried' within large rubber.

Last, in the 17" wheel size, there are many more tire size options available, than in say, 18" or 20".

17" for sure.

Tires are so friggin expensive for 20" rims it's ridiculous....not to mention 20's look stupid on trucks anyway.

Everyone has their own taste, based on their own DNA and the influences of the culture of the region they live in; but having said that, I agree, those large diameter 20" or 22" wheels and skinny low profile rubber on a truck labled FX4 or 4X4 Off-Road, looks out of place to me. Even my 18" are pushing it, and I wish my truck had come with 17's.

Furthermore, I just bet, there is a Raptor out there somewhere, with aftermarket 20's and skinny profile tires! A real Hollywood Blvd. cruiser!!

20s look great on trucks! But they are more expensive for sure. Im thinking about putting 26's on my truck actually, but I wish I could test drive them first to see how much the ride will change cause there isnt much rubber left at that point, haha!
