Hi.when in 4H or 4L, the car goes straight fine, but if you turn the wheels to the left or right, it just stops. when the gas pedal is pressed, the wheels seem to spin. its normal?The road surface is hard. This is my 4th f150, but this was not the case with others 1FTFW1E59JFD02761
Keep in mind your transfer case has no differential in it. When you turn on a hard surface the front and rear tires are trying to go different speed but with them locked together in 4x4 they try and skip. On snow and ice you won’t notice it as much but on pavement don’t put it in 4 wheel drive. In other words what you describe is normal.
You are never supposed to drive in 4X4 on a hard dry surface with good traction. Technically in a straight line you shouldn't break anything, but when you turn corners each of the 4 wheels are taking a different path to reach the same point. In 4X2 they can all turn at different speeds. In 4X4 they are being forced to turn at the same speed.
Since the wheels on the inside, (especially the front wheel when driving forward, or the rear wheel in reverse), have the shortest distance to travel will spin a little on the ground. If traction is so good that they can't spin you stand a very good chance of breaking something expensive. Even if it doesn't break right then you are over stressing the driveline and this will lead to premature failure of parts.
If your previous 3 didn't do the same thing something was wrong with them. You may have damaged internal parts by driving in 4X4 on dry surfaces in those so badly that you weren't actually in 4X4.
A photo of my 4X4 ATV to illustrate. See how much the inside front wheel spun on wet grass. The outside front wheel spun some and the inside rear wheel only slightly. Only the outside rear wheel did not spin. It had the greatest distance to travel. Had I tried this on pavement the ATV would have really been bucking and shaking with the left front tire squealing as it spun.
Hi, I have the same issue. My question is - if I go to the mountains, I switch to the 4Hi or 4low. But you may have a hard surface in the mountains, and I will have this issue each time I need to turn. Does it mean I need to go back to 2Hi each time I need to make a turn? I sounds like nonsense
I have a circle turn around with and island in the middle at my house. When I back out of my garage with snow on the ground I still leave it in 2wd. Even on snow when I turn sharp I can feel it fighting me in the steering wheel. When I get it going straighter I shift into 4wd.
